I think it'd be interesting to see what the average wheeler of an Fj80 takes along off-road. From spare parts to bailing wire, and duct tape let's see what is most important to you, so that newbies like me can plan ahead.

For a desert backcountry trip: Two weeks supply of food and water.
Hiking boots and a backpack just in case.

Wasn't aware of other threads. Not only am I a new Fj owner, I'm new to this forum, and forums in general. My sincere apologies. :-)

Thanks

Where are you going that you need 2 weeks of food and water?

It's an 80 so...anywhere you want. Just kidding. But spare food is always good to have.

That is really a loaded question because there are so many people with some many different wheeln styles/adventure trip trekkers.
Not one list is going to be the same nor will peoples opinions on what you should take.

Alot also depends on what type of off roading you plan on doing.

There is a big difference in what you should carry as opposed to what you can carry.

For me it is mostly weekend rockcrawling trips and depending on the distance I have to travel will dictate if I carry big spare parts or not,ie. birfilds etc.

If its fairly close to home , within an hour drive I will usually not carry spare parts just a good set of tools, fluids and other misc. crap.

If I am traveling further spares usually come along for the ride.

In the end it really all depends on what "you" are going to be doing with the truck and where.

Roger that. I realized it as soon as I posted. Thank you for going the extra mile, and specifying the gear you use for specific wheeling, and distance from home.

I think it depends how far you will be going and how long you will be gone. A good recovery strap should be on the list. Plenty of water, maybe some extra fuel, zip ties, safety wire and duct tape, assortment of basic tools, matches, a flashlight, a warm sleeping bag, SNACKS!
lots of money...and....and....a camera

Mostly Death Valley, and also Burning Man.
Good rule for desert travel: 2 gallons per person per day for drinking, cooking, bathing.
You don't want to leave the backcountry with empty water jugs. If you don't need the extra water, your car might, or you may encounter someone else who is in need.

I have 3 tool bags. One is various sizes of screw drivers. One is all open end wrenches and sockets. The last is all other hand tools. Spare front and rear shafts and birfs. I carry a box of shop towels, a tarp, spools of wire, various electrical connectors and fuses, extra c clips for the rear axles, my old spider gears if a locker goes bad, a few efi relays, jumper cables, a spare fan and fan clutch, a cordless impact, big ass craftsman pry bar, studs and cone washers for the front steering arm brackets (not sure exactly what they are called), an alternator, one of my old drive flanges, and my recovery bag (d ring, snatch block, short chain, winch remote, few straps). I'm sure there is more but I couldn't think of anything else. This is with the third row in place.
Edit: few gallons of coolant, atf, gear oil, starter fluid(to reseat beads)

Tools:
Metric and sae sockets wrenches. 54mm socket for axle work, hammers (bfh) and misc pliers, screwdrivers...... . Extra fusible links, 2 relays (fuel & ect), fuses, fan belts, tube of dielectric grease, extra wire, bailing wire, plumbers tape, duct tape, 18" of 5/8 heater hose and hose clamps. Fluids (oil, trans, gear, brake and coolant). Basics

Equipment:
Shop rags, Hi/lift jack, 2 tow straps, d-rings, tree saver, good jumper cables, gloves, flashlight, block and tackle, shovel, 2 tarps, rope, tire plug kit, air pump or air compressor........ First aid kit, sunscreen, change of clothes, fire extinguisher (ABC type)' hatchet/axe, saw, big & little knife. Basics

Each list can be added or subtracted from as needed but that should give you a basic starting point.
I prefer tool bags over tool boxes. They are quieter and can be made to fit in many more tight spots.

Welcome to the 80 fever.

As I haven't done any real wheeling trips yet... my 80 is mostly stocked with emergency related gear. Just getting started on getting it stocked up...

Stuff for me:
Sleeping bag
2 gallons of water
warm clothes, gloves, hat, socks, boots
assorted goodie bag of Clif Bars, trail mix, jerky

Stuff for my truck:
1 gallon Toyota Red
1 gallon of distilled
4 quarts of oil
recovery strap
jumper cables
some heater hose and clamps

Bug Out Bag:
a few loaded 9mm mags
Surefire G2 light
batteries
Water purification tabs
lots and lots of little stuff
Leatherman Skeletool
NOTE: Get a good strap. I high centered myself in the snow screwing around at work and we snapped a brand new Pep Boys 10k lb strap like it was a shoe string

I searched all of the treads on this subject and combined them together. I still have some clean up to do. Once I get a consolidated list I'll put it out for all to see.

There seems to be two schools of thought:
How to fix anything that breaks, and how to survive untill help arrives.

Tools, belts, oil/fluids, fuses, air pump, jumper cables, portable jumpstart battery unit, radiator hose repair tape, GPS and GPS smartphone, food and water, and if all else fails, a mountain bike and riding gear to get me outta there.

I just want to say a quick thanks to all that have taken the time to reply. I've already seen lots of helpful equipment that I would have never thought of. Although I would have to pull a trailer to carry everything mentioned I feel like I am gettin a feel for the important stuff. I'm mainly unfamiliar with the weak spots on the cruiser, I'm sure "elsy" is weak where some of your rigs aren't with just shy of 300k miles on her, but she still sounds, and hasn't been abused, and drives like she's got another 300k in her! I look fwd to meeting fellow cruisers on the trail, and hope to do my maiden voyage off-road later this year in my favorite vacation spot so far beautiful Colorado. Take care! Dale

I have found that most people who seem to like to post up on this subject pack like my wife does for a 3 day vacation...

"Sweety, we do not need 5 bags for this trip, Oh, you mean that's just your stuff???"
