Ok - nothing to do with my cruiser, but figured there might be someone who might know the answer on the board. I bought a used RV a couple of years ago up in Phoenix and drove it down to Tucson and parked it at a storage lot. It was some unknown model of cat diesel, with an Allison tranny, shoehorned into a mid-80's class A tandem axle. I am now in a position to actually be able to move it, and of course, its dead.

Thought it was a 3208 or 3208t, but when I popped the doghouse to check, I saw (see below) that valve cover. The area around it is pretty darn tight, and I have no idea where to find the plate that should identify it in any case without knowing the engine model. I know its a CAT cause its yellow, and the valve cover proclaims it as well. If anyone can at least narrow it down to what family of engine it is, that should let me know if its a 12v or 24v system, and how much PITA its gonna be. I had put stabil-d in it when I parked it, but I expect that mucho biocide and such in the near future once I can get enough juice to start it.

Is there a member who is a heavy diesel mechanic who can identify the mill, and set me on the path of bringing it back from the dead?

Thanks in advance, and apols for a non FJ-60 post.

I can tell you that you are way better off with that motor than a 3208. I would need to know a bit more about it before I can guess what it is. I don't see injector lines which would lead me towards a 3116 or 3126. As I recall those engines were a common rail with a mechanical injector but it's been 10+ years since I looked at one and even longer since I worked on one.

12 or 24 is really a matter of chassis manufacture preference. I would guess 12 but check to see how the batteries are wired. Positive to positive on the batteries means 12v, positive to negative on them means that it is 24v.

Grin. I agree - I have a different class A with a 3208 currently, and I was looking at this one as being a source of replacement parts for that existing one. If its a significantly niftier engine, I will probably then have to debate about trading up in the other MH. Its a much nicer pusher rig, this one is a front engine install but is considerably rougher, and I had gotten the rig originally as a project. From the one drive down from Pbx, it was pretty responsive for being a 35' rig, but with the driver sitting right on top of it, it was awfully darn loud. Will start looking for comparison shots of 3116 and 3126 mills to see if I can match it up, and I'll have to look at the batteries - one set is in series, but not sure if they were 12 or 6's - could either be a 24v stack for the engine, or a 12v stack for the coach batteries.

For the most part those engines came in mid size trucks and would have been 12v

My vote is the 3116.
