I have blue OEM Headlights and yellow fog lights in my cruiser. Does anybody know what kind of headlights Toyota used for this setup??

Mike,

Do you mean the H4 bulbs (high/low) bulbs used for them?

As for the fogs (inner pair with yellow shade), I don't know what type of bulbs are used.

Yes Mot,

the high/low bulbs. Why has our LC blue bulbs in Asia and in most other places white bulbs?

Mike,

The OEM H4(and 9005/6?, separate high/low bulbs) bulbs were never blue.

PO must have put in the blue ones. You would be doing yourself a favor by either going back to stock or get more efficient or even slightly higher powered bulbs from a reputable manufacturer.

You are lucky as there seems to be more to choose from for H4 than what the 9005/6 guys have.

This statement cannot be correct because I haven't seen a 80 LC here without blue bulbs. So since they all have the blue bulbs they should be OEM. All 80 cruisers here have the yellow fog lights too. I will check it out for the 100 and the Prado.

Mike,

I don't know why we don't see eye to eye when it comes to Cruiser lighting (your "yellow" fog light bulb statements compared to my white bulbs with yellow built-in covers inside the housing while back :D ) I sincerely hope that I am not deceiving you here again. ;)

Anyway, I don't know how many 80's were sold new in Thailand, compared to used ones from Japan (I'm assuming that's where the used ones came from). But I would bet almost anything that those "blue" bulbs you are speaking of were'nt OEM.

However, don't take my word for it (obviously you don't :D ), but do as what Rick has suggested. Why don't you check your manual, unless it's written in Japanese, or simply ask your local Toyota dealer to get you a pair of "OEM" bulbs.

I guess another possible explanation(sp) to what could have happend to all the 80's in Thailand was that the dealers (new) or the importers (used) somehow painstakingly swapped all the "clear" headlight bulbs for the "blue" ones. I don't know if you would still call that "OEM" or port-installed option then. :D

I think that Koito manufactured the OEM headlight housing, so there's a good chance that the bulbs were also made them. So you might just want to pull one out and see if it says so on it.

Anyway, please let us know of your findings, I, for one, am curious and hope that you would take back the statement you had made above. :)

Mot,

I am sorry. I didn't want to be rude :o

I was just wondering since all our 80's here have the blue bulbs or whatever. Anyway, I know that you are right and I hereby revoke my statement above.

I think you are right with the port-installed option by the importers here in Thailand. That will be the same reason why most cruisers here have similar options incl. of similar brush guards, fog lights etc.

So long live MOT

But you have a memory like an elephant. :D

Mike,

You weren't rude, Mike! ;)
You are a true gentleman. :)

I did not know that elephants had such good memories. ;) I hope that was a compliment anyway. :D

There are a lot more H4 choices than 9005/9006. Basically 9006/9005 are limited to stock, crummy quality 80 & 100 watt Korean bulbs, or (thank God) HIR's.

German made H4 bulbs come in the following:

55/60 watt
55/100 watt
80/100 watt
90/130 watt
100/140 watt

Plus they are available with a yellow tint, complements of the old days when the French used yellow bulbs.

Let's assume that I have 80/100 Watt then the best option would be 100/140 Watt??

Is that right Cary??

Hi Mike,

You might consider upgrading the wiring harness with separate relay and fuse when upgrading to the 100/140 watt - it's double the stock wattage.

One option for more light output without upgrading the wiring is to change to the Philips Silverstar bulbs (not the US Sylvania Silverstar). It puts out 30-40% more light with the stock wattage bulbs (55/60 watts).

John

John

The phillips silver stars DO NOT put out 30-40% more light. The US ones put out the same lumens as the stock bulbs, and the european ones (different bulb) are at most 10-15% more lumens.

Asiarider- If you are going brighter than the 80/100 bulbs, you need to upgrade your wiring harness with relays and fused links direct from the battery. I would be very careful going brighter than the 80/100 bulbs as the hi watt bulbs put out a great deal of heat and can melt the fixtures (unless they are glass) and reflector assembly (usually plastic now days). Also the higher watt H4 bulbs will have a shorter life. Finally, the only time I recall anyone used these bulbs was in the old Cibie and Hella 7x6 or 7" round Eurolamps which were metal/glass lamps.

Here are specs on the 80/100 v. 90/130, note the 130 lamps are in excess of HID lamps which output 3000-3200 lumens (except for the 50 watt HID's wich are up at 5000 lumens and not in any cars)

H4 OVERWATT 100/80 2600/1500 Not in plastic lamps!
H4 OVERWATT 130/90 3550/1820 Not in plastic lamps!

My mistake - it's the Osram Silverstar (NOT the same ones as the Philips/Sylvania Silverstar) and it does put up to 50% more light at the critical area between 50M - 100M. It probably puts out about 10-20% more total Lumens. See reference in Osram's website

The US 80 series has glass headlamps - at least on my 97 model.

John

Osram is a divsion of Phillips/Sylvania. Light output is measured in Lumens and the silverstars do not provide additional lumens.
