I was planning to buy a set of new front OEM shocks for my 2001 LC today, but hit a strange issue.

My understanding was that the process is simple. Just order:

48511-69625 (around $40 ea)

...and that should be the shock with all the necessary nuts, and bushings to do the job.

The local shop then quoted me a bunch of "extras" that they claim are also needed:

90948-02176 Retainer (x2 @ $11.03 ea)
90948-02182 Retainer (x2 @ $13.34 ea)
90948-02174 Retainer (x4 @ $14.85 ea)

This kind of caught me off-guard, especially since these "retainers" actually add up to over $108!!! That's more than the shocks themselves cost!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can clarify if these parts are really needed or if I'll get everything I need just by ordering the complete shock part number (48511-69625)?? I checked the TLCFAQ already, and now I'm trying to decode those part numbers on the OlatheToyota.com website

Thanks!

You don't need to replace the plates unless they are deformed for some reason. The bushings come with the shocks. CDan did mention there was a spacer on the rear that needed to be added into my order when I got all new stock shocks, but it was only in the rear and I don't recall them being more then 5 bucks each.

I believe the reason for the spacers on my rear shocks only was due to the OEM shocks being updated in new model years and mine being a model year 2000. I'd check with CDan to be sure if you even need those.

The only thing I would add is that even for aftermarket shocks that come with centering washers I would do my best to re-use the stock. They're very robust. You may, however, need to pre-load the bushing a bit buy pushing up on the LCA/axle to get the nut started as the OE washers are thick...
