Any thoughts on an OEM carb for a 1984 FJ60? I really want this truck to be a reliable daily driver. 200k and the engine is in good shape. Any thoughts?

It is more expensive than a rebuild (a lot) but it seems to my uneducated guess that it should be really reliable.

Thanks from an utter newbie.

First off - Welcome. Assuming that your 60 has a stock 2F you'll find a 2bbl Asin carb on the intake manifold. Asin is a great carb and is extremely reilable for use as a DD. Try using the search function to learn more about the different carbs that you can run - Holley's are a common alternative, but'you'll have to change the linkage from the pedal to the throttle. Either Jim C or Mark W (both on mud) can rebuild your existing carb and dial it in for around $300. The beauty is that all you have to do is bolt it back on and drive.

Just my $.02 - best money I've spent in a long time.

New carburetors are still available. They are pretty tall dollars however. The current suggested list price is $853.89.

Do a search on Jim C. Everyone has a good experience. Your carb will be better than new and much cheaper as well. I'm not trying to take sales away from American Toyota, but a Jim C. (FJ40Jim here on IH8MUD) rebuilt stock carb will give you excellent and good as new performance. for less than half the cost of a new one.

Mark Algazy also has a rep as an excellent carb rebuilder. I forget his name here on IH8MUD, but he would be another resource. I did not know Mark W(atley) rebuilt carbs.

The reliability of the carb is the same, if it is new or rebuilt to better than new.

The two things that take a carb down are:
- Aging soft parts. Doesn't matter if it's new or not, it's only as young as the secondary diaphragm and the AP plunger.
- Dirt. Dirt from rusty fuel lines, from dirty fuel, from a bad air filter, from a failing FP diaphragm... Dirt gets into any carb and eventually mucks up the works.

The advantages to the new OEM carb is that it fits, is probably assembled correctly (unlike some sweatshop rebuilds), and there's no core hassles.

Jim, you are too modest. I would rather have a carb rebuilt and dialed in by Jim than a new OEM carb... sorry Dan, not trying to take the dollars from the ALB area, just my opinion.

I just installed a OEM "non-us" carb on my 86 and couldn't be happier. I ended up costing me around $900 bucks, but I was able to pull off all of that emissions crap. The engine is so clean now. If I need to adjust the carb I just grab a screwdriver and go for it. Before I had to fish through a sea of vacum lines. All the time wondering "I wonder if one of those VCV's is causing a vacum leak?"

Got my stuff from spector. Good quality but pricy.
