After starting slow for a few days, my battery finally died this morning. So after doing a morning full of research, I headed off to the local BatteriesPlus to get a new battery, this one in particular:

SLI27FM - Duracell Ultra Gold Battery for 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser V8 4.7L 710CCA Car and Truck at Batteries Plus Bulbs

Pretty stout battery at 840 CCA, which will certainly help this winter. Since I needed a jump to just get to the store, I elected to change it in the parking lot. After fighting with it to fit (had to remove the plastic battery tray since the bracket wouldn't touch in the front), I went to start the truck.

Here's where things got weird. Each time I started it, the engine would immediately start then die. It did it about three times in a row. One of the employees wandered out to help and thought it was the starter, but that doesn't make sense. I checked my OBD reader and didn't have any codes either. We tried it again and this time it stayed running, and now runs just like it always did.

Here's my question, do you guys know why it wouldn't stay running? The truck was disconnected from probably 20 minutes or so while I got everything fitted. Also, am I okay not using the plastic tray, or should I find a solution?

When you remove the battery you reset the ecu. It is common to let it idle for five minutes and then drive streets/highway for 20 minutes to set the idle drive baseline.

B+ should have put the tool on your obd 2 port to save your settings before the removal/ change. I own a number of B+ stores in Houston and it is SOP at our stores.

Mine will do the same thing takes several tries to get it to idle...I see you are from Milwaukee - WFB high school class of '78 here.
