Is there a recommended scanner or tool (brand/manufacturer) to read codes from these trucks, or specifically Toyota vehicles in general. Is one brand better than others. I have a GX470 and I also have a 2002 4Runner that I want to be able to read codes and monitor some things. There are some threads about this subject but many of them are older. It seems like many use an app on the phone, is that the way to go now as opposed to a separate hand held unit?

I have this one (WiFi that links to a phone, but you can also get a Bluetooth one).
Amazon product ASIN B078K54MT5
It's paired with Torque Pro ($4.95), which works on a phone or Android head unit. Allows all codes to be read and allows engine vitals to be viewed in real time (MAF flow, O2 sensor reading, trans temperature, just about everything). I have a Phoenix Android head unit in my GX and can watch sensor readings and read/clear codes directly from it, as I leave the adapter plugged in all of the time.

I had a separate code reader for years (bought it prior to the advent of smartphones) and would never want to go back. Using the phone-based app provides a lot more flexibility and allows for data logging of sensors and export of the data to a .csv file that you can pull into Excel and process. It's a huge benefit when trying to troubleshoot and monitor the health of an engine. See the attached volumetric efficiency testing I did on my GX when troubleshooting a MAF code and high fuel trim issue (ended up being a vacuum leak and bad MAF sensor connector). There is no way to do this with a lower-cost standalone code reader that doesn't link with the processing power of a smartphone. A standalone reader with this capability would probably be hundreds of dollars (not $32 like a Bluetooth/WiFi reader and a smartphone with Torque Pro).

I think I bought the same wifi odb2 device as @Rednexus but i use “car scanner”app for iPhone which has good limited free access like reading and clearing up to 10 times.

i bought the $6.99 lifetime access, so now I have the “car scanner pro” version of the app.

it works with all my Lexus and Toyota’s cars, has good reviews for iPhone.

torque pro is for android if you have that phone.

I was just on the "car scanner" app website and it seems legit. I have an Iphone so this looks like a good option. Thanks!
