I’ve heard that more parts are becoming obsolete for these. So I wonder if I should stock up on stuff that will eventually need replacement. My LC is an 1989 BJ 74 with 143000 km. The mechanical is all solid and I only plan to drive it occasionally so it doesn’t get a lot of mileage. My plan is to drive it when I’m 75! (23 more years). Since it’s not my daily driver I don’t have to worry if a part takes a while to arrive.

So here is the stuff that I think I should just buy and then replace as needed and my time allows

Rear side window gaskets both sides (they are gone....)
Windshield gaskets and seal to Frp top (never been done).
All radiator hoses

I am hoping other parts are either going to last, or can still be found aftermarket or used.

Should I worry?

What else would be worth trying to stockpile?

Thanks.

You should have stocked up years ago. Most of the important engine parts are no longer available.

These parts are plentiful.
The windscreen rubber parts are easily available as the fold down windscreens were still available in some African countries as recently as 3-4 years ago.
Im not sure if the rear window seals are the same as a troopy but if they are they are also plentiful.
The radiator hoses have the same part number as the 3B engine which was still being fitted well into the 90s and will probably be available for ever.

Interesting so I won’t rush on these. I just got this thing two years ago so really didn’t have much of a chance to stock up. Given the low km I’m not sure what engine parts I should really worry about. I can get an alternator rebuilt, I had to do a new starter already. Maybe turbo rebuild kit?

A lot of the engine parts like the starter are the same as on other Toyota diesels. Its the parts that are unique to the BJ74, like the thermostat housing and the master cylinder, I forget if its the clutch or brake MC. For the turbo , I would buy a new aftermarket.
There is an engine called a 13B, same as yours but no turbo and was used in Dyna trucks, so I imagine most parts will be the same.

Not available:
Camshaft
Crankshaft
Upper thermostat housing
Camshaft freeze plug: possibly aftermarket I’m looking at other makes 56mm
Head
Block
Radiator - custom, or modify different model
Injectors

Those you will have to find used, or repair if possible. I reground my cam and crank.
You have to get creative.

I will add more as I remember.

I know you can get aftermarket lifters, bearings, pistons, liners, gaskets and seals. The OEM stuff is getting harder on some of it.

Engine Australia has a lot of rebuild parts for the 13bt. I have a a full engine rebuild kit, bearings, pistons, rings, all seals and gaskets.

Can’t get:
intake/exhaust manifolds.
Half doors rear

Cruiser outfitters has clutch kits available.

The top thermostat housing mate...
That little **** is the end of the mighty 13bt.
You will read/hear heaps of stories of the 13bt overheating randomly, nobody knows why, there seem to be no explanation. A fortune goes to fix/replace thermostat, water pump, radiators... you name it. The problem is the freaking housing! It leads to blown head gaskets and crack head if you are not paying attention.
Make sure you get one of those.

I would like to hear more of why you think it's the housing? I'm not doubting you at all, just completely curious as someone who is currently rebuilding a 13bt.

Hi lazylfarm, after going through all the "Usual Suspects": radiator cup, thermostat, water pump, radiator, cylinder head gasket
and cylinder head the problems didn`t go away...
A week after the repairs were done I had a blown head gasket again.
Back to the mechanic, they noticed how corroded the water outlet was, the part wasn`t available so they cleaned it and put an aluminium putty or compound where the radiator cup seals and did some sanding and resurfacing on the lower part.
That repair plus another head gasket brought my Land Cruiser back to its former glory.
Sadly it only lasted for a couple of weeks.
Pieces of the aluminium putty where found in the overflow tank so this time the water outlet was sent to be welded and "resurfaced".
It was not a perfect job, considering its cost, but it did the trick. All the problems are gone.
Now I`m trying to find a new housing.
Cheers

Sorry, still hijacking this thread:

what is the "radiator cup"?

And are you saying the outlets on that upper thermostat housing were plugged/corroded and thats what they welded/putty? Not sure if you have pictures but that would help me :) I see you on on that thread in the diesel section where someone is trying to recreate that upper thermostat housing.

My upper thermostat housing was blocked on the overflow right at the cap. I'm sure that caused some issues regarding the headgasket fail on mine along with failing radiator and possibly bad water pump. A hose burst and it overheated, but I'm sure the above caused the issues.

Sorry by radiator cup I meant the lid on top of the thermostat housing.

The problem was the inside of the water outlet (top thermostat housing however you call it, 16331-58030).
If you put your finger around the inside you will feel it right away at the top where the cup seals and at the bottom where the thermostat sits.
It`s corrosion, it happens in all the housings I`ve seen, some are worst than others. Mine was pretty bad.
Don`t know how to upload pictures yet but I`ll get some.
If you have any other questions just ask away...
I was dealing with the overheating issues for 18 months!
They`ve finally gone away.
Cheers
Adrian
