I am usually pretty good with search but have read til my eyes are blurry. Is there a water temp seniding unit adapter for the autometer gauges the goes from npt to bspt. I see several references for the oil 1/8 size but nothing really on the 1/2 inch water unit. Several people have mentioned 2270 adapter but from what i read that is still NPT.

I know i installed something like this on my 60 ten years ago but cant seem to find what I am looking for. 3/8 npt to 1/2 bspt or am I looling at adding a 1/2 ntp to 1/2 bspt to the existing 3/8 to 1/2 adapter that came with the unit.

I think you are making this way too hard. 1/2 NPT fits your engine, and 3/8 NPT fits your sender.

I understand that you can put the 1/2 npt into the engine. I would like to use the BSPT if its available.

I just put a (new) rebuilt head on my 77. The shop that did the work tried to use the 1/2" npt--it didn't work. You can only get maybe 1 or two threads into the hole before it binds up(and then it leaks). This was for the OEM sender. I even ordered a new adapter from SOR--it came as npt also and didn't fit either. I ended up grinding and filing down the npt adapter to get it to go into the hole(I had to take off almost half of the length so the sender would get down into the coolant) and used red RTV to help seal it.
I also installed an Autometer analog gauge as a back-up. For that I removed one of the water jacket plugs on the head and drilled it out, then tapped it for the Autometer gauge sender--If you do this, be sure to get the sender deep enough so that it gets into the coolant flow and won't trap air.

It might be easier is you simply state which size threads you need adapted; from what to what, including the indication of M or F.

Here are some examples of what I found.

I guess it all depends on your engine. I have installed 1/2" NPT fittings into every 2F head I have, and they screw in just fine and no leaks using a wrap or two of Teflon tape. You don't want the nipple to go very deep into the head anyway because the water passage at the top of a 2F head is very shallow, and I always have to put an extender nipple on to get enough clearance for the manual water temp gauge sending unit to fit.

Both 1/2" NPT and 1/2" BSPT have 14 threads per inch but the NPT is larger (having a nominal bore of 0.8356 compared to 0.825 for BSPT)

(I'm not sure how you measure the "nominal bore" of a tapered thread but this is what my books tell me...)

So if your 1/2NPT to 3/8NPT doesn't enter by more than a couple of threads, running a 1/2 NPT tap in there will deepen the existing thread without any cross-threading..

Just a thought..

I understand that I can make a NPT fit and i know that you can rethread the opening. I have used the search function till my eyes have crossed so I understand all of these options. I am specifically looking for an adapter that anyone has used. I have taken note of the 2270 adapter from autometer but in the descriptions I have read state its a npt thread. I would like to know if its npt to bspt of just an extensions and expansion adapter.

I have read several heated discussion between the "1/2 inch is 1/2 inch" group vs the "just because it goes in doesn't mean it fits" group and I have to believe that there are several out there that have used some kind of adapter. Pleanty of descriptions on the 1/8 adapter for oil but no mention of the 1/2 adapter I am looking to use on the water.

I hear you Thad.. (I think :D)

So what you really want is a BSPT to NPT reducing bush .... Right?

Don't expect to find one just anywhere because they're a low-demand specialist item...

But you can find suppliers with a bit of Internet searching...

Here's an offering from a company in the UK for instance:

Hi all,

I had the same issue when installing the temperature sensor for a GM TBI conversion on the 2F in my FJ40.
I found the necessary adapter from NPT to BTP at a local industrial supplier (it took some looking!)

Good luck!

Alan
