I'm in Virginia and there a undercoating shop that provides this service. They exclusively use a Swedish brand called Noxudol. I couldn't find any good videos of what this stuff looks like. I was told it is asphalt based coating (not rubberized). Anyone have this stuff as the undercoating? How has it held up? Any concerns similar to rubberized coating where rust can come in underneath?

Not familiar with that product, but I go back and forth on how I feel about an undercoating that will make a rubberized / hardened seal, as it could trap moisture and cause rust under the coating. I've dabbled in a few different techniques on old beater trucks.

It's one thing if the vehicle is not rusty and you put the coating on, but maybe just try to wire wheel rust and spray some automotive paint on? How rusty is your rig?

I had some surface rust around the bottom of my doors. I tried sanding it to bare metal and using Rustoleum white primer. The rust spots, less so, but would eventually (a year or two later) come back. So I bought some Corroseal Converter. So I hand sanded (or dremel sanded) the rust spots again, put two coats of this stuff on and the rust hasn't made a reappearance. You can prime and paint over it. It converts any trace rust (that maybe you can't even see) to an inert compound. I've seen images of totally rusted iron barbells painted with this stuff and the rust is now converted to a black compound. Easy to use, water cleanup.

I’m also in Virginia and talked to what I assume is the same shop 2 yrs ago or so. Ended up passing. Post #68 below has me feeling like that was the right decision.

Noxudol is a Toyota approved product for corrosion prevention on its frames:

Phosphoric acid is a better choice, IMHO. Spray it on, it converts the iron oxide into iron phosphate and seals the area chemically against rust. No muss, no fuss. Way cheaper than undercoating and you can do it yourself, as much or as little at a time as you please. Surface is paint ready after application.

It's a weak acid and you can neutralize it with baking soda.

Your humble OP for an update:

@vcheng thanks for the information. I learned something new. It's reassuring Noxudol is Toyota approved! I looked up the product and it is used in the UK, and very popular. So it is a quality product. It is Swedish and people use it in winter climates on their Volvos so that is good by me.

I dropped the car off at APS Fairfax today and had the chance to talk with the owner and tech. The Tech showed me his personal truck (F-150) which had the product applied. It is smooth like black paint and does not feel as gooey. I've made the decision to go ahead. This shop seem to know what they are talking about and have done it over 40 years.

Will report back with final results and pics.

Picked the car up and I am very happy with the results. The coating looks like paint. Slight feel of gooey, but not runny or sticky as you'd think.

Thank you for posting pics. Please report back and update after a winter and let us know how it holds up. Only time will tell I guess but it looks way tighter than the NH Oil Undercoat I use. Or maybe it’s just because it’s black. I always go for the no color option.

I also went to APS in Fairfax for Noxudol application: Service in May 2021 for my 2017 GX that I got in April 2021. Let's see how it performs!

Also had front windows tinted with 50% 3M ceramic -- looks great.

APS had a solid team, very responsive.

OP Update: I ended up moving to California so I am not sure I can post a winter update. Instead, I wanted to update you on the glossiness. So, let me just say that over time (It's been a year since) as the product dries and "settles" there is ZERO glossiness whatsoever. The black is literally a matte finish, it looks so great. I am still very impressed.

Glad you did this, I dont think you will be disappointed.
