Hey guys...

Just wanted to get your opinions on what a fair price would be for replacing the seals and bearings on the front axle of a 95 fzj80. Afew months back I brought mine into Toyota to have a check done. They said the trunion seals needed replaced and that it would be around $900 to do the job. Is that pretty standard?

I know there is a Birf party this Saturday and I'm gonna try to attend so I can get the lowdown on the process and see if I can do this myself or at least get a Cruiser guy that would be willing to do it at a reasonable price.

Thanks

isn't there only 4 bolts holding the trunion on? How much are they charging you for the gasket?

You can do a complete birf repack, including replacing all bearings and races for less than $400 for parts and materials. It's an all day job but not to difficult, just messy. Go to the birf party, I'm sure you can pimp one of the guys into helping you do it.
Get the parts from cruiserdan(American Toyota). Unless you already have a Toyota parts connection, you won't get a better price on OEM parts.

Is there a list somewhere on ih8mud or elsewhere that gives a itemized list of what I need to purchaser to do the whole job...?

Call Dan at 1-800-432-6668 #8
Tell him what you want to do and he will get you exactly what you need. He is a Toyota partsmaster and is on this board(mostly in the 80's section and chat).

Thats my way of saying I don't know if there is a complete list of parts, it's a lot of gaskets and seals + bearings and races.

I sold parts for years...

buy an aftermarket kit for knuckle oh. most vendors have them (kurt at cruiseroutfitters etc). wheel bearings should be inspected and repacked. replace them only if scored, burned etc. they are far cheaper from bearing companies than toyota and timkens have historically been cheaper than koyos.

it is one job, that any cruiser owner must do by themselves at least once in their life. Do it on a saturday when you can still have access to a machine shop (parts cleaner). If you think you might need wheel bearings, mon-fri access to bearing shop might be handy. Any repair shop will charge several hours due to cleaning, etc for the job which will nearly always exceed $600. The parts are around $115 for a complete kit (w/o wheel bearings).

i was just gonna say, even with the cruiser buddy discount i would still charge around $400.

I helped Ross do his for a sixer

Appreciate the response... Saturday, I'll get out there to that Birf party and put all this information in the forum to a hands on... Any of you guys going to be there? I know Rhino is...
