Just picked up my first 80 and I love it! Been reading a ton of threads and the faq's. I don't have the FSM yet and was hoping someone could tell me what this hose is for. See attached picture. Thanks to all for the great forum!

OK, since this is one of those tests where it's not open book, I'll play along. Didn't peek at the FSM, but did peek under the hood. I'm pretty sure that is the a heater return line for the rear heater. On my 97, there's a fitting on the hose that angles down from the hose above down to your circled location.
To verify, run truck to operation temp, then turn on Rear Heat. You should get lots of hot air blowing our from under the passenger seat to the rear. If not, then I guessed right it was a rear heat bypass. If it doesn't get hot, there you go.

^2nd that without really checking for myself.
Another clue. Look at the U-shaped pipe up and to the right above the back of the head. Someone's hacked that with a non-OEM clamp and a hose going somewhere different than it looks like on my un-modded truck.

What would be the reason to do this? The front heat works fine, so i'm guessing the heater core is working properly.
Rear heater is a seperate system on these trucks because some markets in the world don't even need heaters. One of the many eccentric things you'll find annoying. Like the lack of ac in the back.
The rear heater is under the passenger seat. Some people in hotter climates do not like this because you have hot coolant running into the cab of your truck. It also may leak over time. I personally love the rear heater keeps the passengers warm and toasty on those really cold days.

You'll also find that the trucks subjected to harsh winters will have the heater pipes under the truck rust out totally ( thats where mine went). Replacing them is not an easy job. Way easier to just cut it out.
Since they cut it out, I'd guess that is the reason for it. Check the pipes underneath before you think about reconnecting, otherwise you could end up with no coolant.

The rear heater also has another important function than just heat. In snowy climes, people tend to track snow into the truck, so it gets to be a humid environment. This causes the windows to fog. There are the usual defogging features on the 80, including front side window vents. But for all the rest of the side windows, the rear heat helps keep them clear.
This was much more of a problem with the flat side windows of my FJ55 and earlier models, where running rear heat really helped.
Yeah, I could never figure out the lack of rear AC in the US market, given it's virtually standard equipment on Toyota's Middle East market vehicles from the 80 onwards.
