Gents,

I'm getting to work on the exterior of my '84 FJ60 and need a little assistance. I lucked out and found a nearly rust-free 60 about a year ago, but there are a couple of spots that need some work. I've done some searching, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I should mention that I'd like to do a full paint job in about a year, so these are somewhat temporary fixes, but would like them to look alright in the meantime.

First, the roof has some oxidation along the raised lines in the sheet metal that I would like to deal with before they become a problem. How do I deal with this? Light wire wheel, then primer, then paint? I should mention that I'll be using rattlecans for this. I figure Rustoleum primer then find the 464 paint code in a rattlecan (if somebody has a good recommendation for a site for this, let me know). I have a similar thing going on in the passenger quarter panel where the PO was hit by his neighbor.

Second, I've got a long scratch across the top of the tailgate that is turning a little rusty. Best way to deal with that? I was thinking taping along it and same deal with primer then paint.

Lastly, the only real bit of rust I've got is under the 4Wheel Drive logo on the tailgate. I know I'll need to deal with the hole eventually, but is it safe to drill away as much rust as possible then hit with rustoleum to contain it for the time being?

Hopefully the pics work to make this thread useful. Thanks for the help.

The primary concern for now is to STOP the rust. You might be able to hand sand the top ribs to bright clean metal and then seal it with something that moisture will not penetrate.
Those deeply pitted areas need to be spot blasted to clean metal and also sealed. That should stabilize things until you can do that paint job.

Hi 1994Hewes,

All rust NEEDS to be removed via SSPC-SP3 Power Tool Cleaning at minimum. Like vtgbeemer said, an abrasive blast is really recommended. If you can't blast this is what I would consider doing...

A power cleaning with power sanders or wire brushes, power chipping hammers, abrasive grinding wheels, needle guns etc. Do not use a grinding wheel because that will smooth out the steel and won't leave a profile for coating to adhere to. For flat areas after cleaning, scuff up the area with 120 or coarser sandpaper. For pitted areas, do as best as you can.

You said you want to use Rustoleum... They have a 2k epoxy primer, which is a 2 part amine epoxy and should work just fine for what you're trying to do. Remember to remove all rust. Apply 2 coats of this at 2-3 mils DFT (Dry Film Thickness), which comes out to about 3.5-5.0 mils wet per coat. Here is a link to the product data sheet http://www.rustoleum.com/~/media/Di... Performance/VK9300_System_RO-09_2295990.ashx . Read it twice. You just need a .PDF reader to open this file.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

just a thought if you have a compressor, buy a small sand blaster some places have a spot blaster, that way you get clean metal and a place for the primer to adhear..
