OK I did a search (extensively) and found the fix for the annoying heat shield rattle. The rattle I have is whenever I go over a bump like entering or exiting my driveway I get a profound rattle that sounds like the truck is comming apart.:frown: It sounds to me like it is comming from the right front. I do need to fix the heat shield rattle, but this sound is only initiated when engaging a bump. I am stumped. I did see in my search for "rattles" that people are experiencing the same thing. Is this related to the heat shield or something different. It really sounds like the truck is comming apart.:censor: TIA for any help I do appreciate it.

Mike

EDIT: I have a 98 Land Cruiser with 103K NO ACCIDENTS or mods of any kind

mine was the clamp for the muffler

TMILL - Thanks for the answer. :) I will most certainly check all the clamps as well. It's a little embarrasing hitting bumps and having people give you the look. Thanks again. Any others have areas for me to look?

It could be the front end rattle that plagues so many 100's, mine included, that has stymied most of us. I've been all over the front of my rig and can not source WTH is rattling.

Well at least I am not the only one. I saw a 100 driving down the road last week and sure enough I heard the same rattle in his. I am perplexed.

I found a small rattle on mine in the skid plates - missing a bolt on the plastic one.

Found it when I was trying to source my ticking noise when cold. When I first take off its there, but after it warms up - gone, also on coast its not there. I am going to test the CV's next from the other rattle thread.

It wouldn't, by chance, be a loose or broken shock. Mine clunked and rattled until I repalced them. They still rattled until i tightned the top nut as far as it would go.

Not on mine. Old OME shocks were tight...and the new Fox shocks are tight.

BMWSTOY - not to hijack the thread, but if you have a ticking noise when cold it's probably your exhaust manifolds. Both mine are cracked.

Hoping to revive this thread. Anyone have any luck diagnosing the rattle problem? My 2000 LX470 front front end rattles on even the slightest bump in the road. You can barely hear it inside the vehicle, but roll down the windows and its really embarrassing. Checked the skidplates are all on tight and I've read that the heat shield/dust shield is a known fix - anyone have any luck getting the noise to stop?

I realize this is an old thread but my brain is melting from lack of success finding the source of this exact rattle. I've done everything:

Rattle coming from passenger (right) front end:

New front shocks
Examined brakes for shims and clips
Removed every skid, belly pan, etc.
Tapped on everything front to back with a rubber mallet
Checked all Ironman bumper attachment points
Had a trusted mechanic inspect everything in the front end
Wrapped a ratchet strap around front bumper extremely tightly

All do this and no difference.

It is a rattle and not a squeak or creak and only generally occurs at lower speeds over potholes and speed bumps. The noise is not noticeable taking speed bumps at high speeds.

I believe, but may now be hearing things, I hear the same noise although faintly , while slightly tapping the brakes. Again I now may be imagining this.

I do not have sliders.

I cannot hear unless pass front window is down. I realize sounds can and do travel but it is not nearly as noticeable with the pass front window up and the pass rear widow down. Likewise I cannot hear it with the tailgate window down.

Help. I am losing what is left of my mind.

I just went through this with new shocks. The lower nuts came loose enough were the shock would move in the perch. It would rattle at slower speeds. I tore the skid plate and everything apart trying to find it. I was able to have my wife jump up and down on the front bumper while i was under the truck. I could not move the shock by hand but under load it would rattle. It could be a million things but this was my demon.

Thanks Motleyone, did the perch wallow out?

The lower perch has a little more malleable type steel. It is possible to spread it a little or get it to squeeze tight against the shock eye. No sure on the torque specs but it needs to be tight enough to compress it against the shock or it will move and rattle. I hope this is your case as it is an easy fix. Good luck.

I have a rattle when hitting bumps, and it is the brake pads, the little tags that are supposed to clamp inside the brake piston are not doing there job, fitted new anti rattle plates but still getting noise, I know it's them because if I have my foot lightly on the brake pedal going down hill I don't get the noise.

Emergency brake linkage in the rear. When it is off the linkage just flops around loose. Pull up on the brake lever when going over bumps and see if the rattle is gone.

Thanks Andyw and Badlander. I'll try a test drive and tap the brakes as well also pull the e-brake. We'll see if the tension either way helps identify the issue

Turns out the anti rattle springs were not installed. O'Reilly's stocked them (surprisingly) but the fit isn't great and the quality doesn't impress me. Ordered OEM parts and hoping the fit will be better. Nice to have the rattle gone! Thanks to all that contributed. The suggestions of testing drive and applying light tension to brakes helped before I started pulling wheels or throwing money at it.

I am a little disappointed my mechanic didn't find it when they had it. Oh well.
