Hey,
So I just picked up an '87 FJ60. I had an '82 that I sold after my 3rd rebuild. I used it as a daily driver and my Baja surf rig. I am looking to build this other one up.

I have a situation that was not disclosed to me. I specifically asked the seller if there were ANY leaks in the vehicle during the rain, and in particular, around the winshield. He said "no, none whatsoever". Well, I picked it up over the weekend and drove it home. Today, we had a tiny bit of rain. Nothing like what we recently had here in Cali. The freaking thing leaked on both the passenger and driver siides!! Arrgh!

Anyway, I must get some cost estimations for the work. Typically what would it run to have rust fixed around the windshield and also around the roof/gutter areas? I know that is kind of vague, but there are at least 8 spots around the roof/gutter area that must be fixed. Areas where a rack used to be.

What do you think?

Thanks

Grab a garden hose and put it on low your windshield and see where the water is coming in. If no water comes in, move it up the windshield until you find the leak.

If water is coming inside your vehicle from rust your rain gutters, you should have seen that before you bought it.

Hey...I have the exact same problem...depending on what you want your truck to look like...there are some quick and easy ways to fix it your self.

I cut out all rust holes in my roof and replaced them with squares of galvanized roofing flashing.

I ground out all rust, sprayed some red (the actual color) rustoleum around the holes and spread silicone all over the place. Then I took some window/door silicone in a caulk gun, made like a gasket, then I screwed the plates to the roof. The screw heads are exposed but I kinda like the look....I'll post photos when I get the thing back from the shop....it ain't pretty...but it works...

Also...in the place where my surf racks would mount, there was no gutter at all...

I fashioned brackets out of the galvanized metal and that did the trick...I can throw two ocean kayaks up there and have not had a problem.

Hope that helps!

cheers

I don't know if its true or not but someone on the mud said that silicone promotes more rust because it is acidic.

Hot mop or Henrys?:D

ha! Tube-0-Henrys! Love it!

I agreed to the rust at the rack areas, so that is a non-issue. What I have a problem with is the fact that the guy, when specifically asked about breach at the int., said "no" no leaks.
I am seeing leaks at areas just behind the windshield.
As of today, we got a bit of rain again and both floor areas are soaked. Again, this guy said "no leaks".

I can fully understand the feesability of leaks occurring/originating from the rust areas and I have no problem with that. The fact that the guy said specifically that there were no leaks is what is a problem, because, yes, there ARE leaks.

They seem to be coming from the windshield area. I intend on having this professionally done as my schedule does not really permit me to spend an extraordinary amount of time on things like this.

Has anybody ever had the rust fixed on the windshield area? How much can this run?

Thanks,
Michael

It is true that silicone promotes rust. The best stuff to use is
made by 3m, it is seam sealer/body sealer

I do not have rust issues, but the sealant in my gutters was getting
thin and checked. I went to a local body shop supply store and bought a tube of seam sealer. I used painters tape to tape off the
paint above the seam and the chrome trim, then used fine sand paper to abrade the area where the existing seam is. I then ran a
bead of seam sealer in the driprail.

It is paintable, but since it is in the driprail and dries white, I probably won't paint mine as my truck is white and you only see it
when you are on a ladder (or you are very tall).
