Guys,

Departing tomorrow 3 am with my wife and 3.5 yr old twins from NOLA. Headed to Chattanooga for a few days to visit a college buddy. What should we do to break up the trip in N Alabama tomorrow? Was thinking Desoto State Park and maybe a BBQ stop?

BBQ in Birmingham at Saw's is the best there is.

Blue Star is also great if you are a football fan.

DeSoto is on point but I would start at the bottom of the west side of Little River Canyon and drive up to the Visitor Center....Collinsville is the exit you want.

. If time permits go to DeSoto SP.

My kids loved making arrowheads at the national park visitor center

Moss Rock Preserve near Birmingham is cool and Oak Mountain State Park has some great hikes. The Peavine Falls hike in Oak Mountain is pretty short.

Hattie B's hot chicken in Birminham is killer and easy to do with young kids.

Little River Canyon is incredible. It's near Fort Payne, Al. Lots of short hikes and the falls is very accessible with young kids. The scenic drive along the river offers lots of nice overlooks, but more driving may not be on your radar.

Noccalula Falls is a very short diversion off of I-59 on the north side of Gadsden. Depending on rain level, it can be pretty spectacular Noccalula Falls Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Like the others said, Little River Canyon is awfully impressive, especially for being in Alabama. If you get off I-59 at Collinsville, head east on Hwy 68. Turn left on Hwy 273 and drive several miles until you get to Daniels Chapel Church. Turn left there and follow 142 to the top of the mountain. Turn right on Cherokee County 275 (a/k/a 427). That's a lesser-known "back way" into the canyon, but one that follows the west rim of the canyon all the way to Little River Falls. It's also a really cool road, especially in the fall.

DeSoto Falls in DeSoto State Park is also one to see (just NW of where 275 comes out at LRF). None of this takes a tremendous amount of time to see, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're in a really big hurry. If you've got time it's really worth the detour........

@dnp did you drive alot of creek crossings on the NWR "approved" routes?

Nat wildlife refuge. Maybe its a state park only?

I thought I recalled you posting pics of Andy, Lenny and you doing some pretty serious creeks last fall? Am I confusing trips.

Lenny, Martin, Val, and I did a trip up this way back in 2012, I think. We crossed Little River north of the canyon a couple of times, but I believe those were the only times.

Beautiful area up there, and not that far from this sauna. Western NC / Eastern TN are even better. More to see and do.

Just a little update on this guys, we did little river canyon, it was very impressive and beautiful. As to eats, we stopped in Rainbow City on the way up and ate at a place on the river, Local joe's,
ry%3D400
its more of a marina with food. The food wasn't really spectacular, but the setting is very nice. On the way back we did Pruett's BBQ in Gadsen with the kids, it was great. Also hit the original Dreamland in Tuscaloosa for a bathroom break, a couple brews and a half slab of ribs, if you haven't been, you should.

In Chattagnooga, we knocked out Rock City
ry%3D400
, the incline railway
ry%3D400
, and the ducks tour
ry%3D400
with the kids. All big hits, although my son's highlight was cardboard hill
ry%3D400
(free sledding on cardboard at the river levee) and daughters was the $1 carousel at the park on the north side of town
ry%3D400
. I think my highlight in TN was the pedestrian bridge in the city
ry%3D400
. Wife's was likely strolling downtown which was revitalized in the last ten years.

On the way back down we did Clarkco state park cabins
ry%3D400
which are really nice and sleepy (we were only people in the park), and hit Stricks BBQ in Hattiesburg which was probably the best BBQ of the entire trip.

As to the overland report, my tundra has 180k and the sequoia has 140K, so we opted to rent a brand new rav4. Even with the 4 cyl it is a peppy little ride even in eco mode (1199 miles avg 28.9 mpg door to door). It swallowed up twin 3 yr olds, momma/me, a 65 qt yeti, a weber Q1000
ry%3D400
, and all our stuff for the week. Drove like a mid tier sedan (read better than tundra/seq), had decent ground clearance for pull offs at the state parks, and I figure even with $2 gas it paid for itself in oil change and mpg.

So I am planning our March trip to North Alabama/Nooga. Here's what I have. Any major mistakes here? Any must eats I'm bypassing, any good gravel/service roads near Little River? @NOLAKS did some great stuff, but I've done a few of those with the kids all ready.

Edit: just noticed rock city is on there..

So I'll revise my recommendation to suggest Ruby falls. If you (or the fam) like Chocolate, stop by the hot chocolatier across from the Choo choo. Neat little local shop.

@jynx thanks. I’m not into claustrophobic situations so no falls for me. Will definitely look into the hot chocolate !! Thanks.

Edit: just saw you were not into claustrophobic spaces. Someone may have mentioned below then.

If you have kids and want a fun activity, Racoon mountain in Chatanooga can be a lot of fun. They have 1-4 hr cave tours. I took my boys a few years ago and they still talk about it. Nothing super cool to see in the caves, but you do have to crawl through some really tight holes, over and under things. We took the long tour and it was just bordering on too long.
