Any tips out there on quieting noisy coilovers? I'm running Swayaway Racerunners on my 76' FJ55 and the noise they make while cycling is driving me batty. The coils rub on the shock housing making the noise. Does not seem to be damaging anything but still...

I'll send you my fj55 leafs and you send me those noisey POS coil-overs???

;) I appreciate the offer. Pretty happy with flex and ride. Just nit-picking I guess. I'll just turn up the radio...

I agree. I suspect the isolaters are deforming (happening on both sides) but cannot be sure. I'm just throwing this out to Mud to see if anyone has come across this before and what their solution was.

OMG, they must be loud if you can hear them over the road noise of a PIG...nice truck, dude.

Race parts make race noises. Your dual rate slider is going to slide along the shock body and it may take some time if they're new for them to wear into it. It'll still make some amount of noise though regardless. Heims/uniballs can also be noisy. Wash them, Wax the shock body, spray lube the heims, turn up radio.

I think this is the truth of it. Units are not new but have been noisy from day 1. I think some non-tacky wax might be helpful. Thanks for your input.

From the pic, it looks like the slider is trashed. It moves up and down the shock body, keeping coils in line, which yours aren't.

Can't tell in pic, but SAWs may have an adjustable stop ring, that threads down the body to keep the lower from overextension. The slider keeps the coils inline, stop ring keeps lower coil seated and limit straps keep the coils from separating when fully extended.

Looks to me like the coils separated during overextension, and damaged the slider.

You shouldn't hear the coils clanging, wax ain't gonna fix, and link Jim posted is probably what you need, BUT, it'd take a ten minute call or email to SAW for them to review and offer up a solution. Considering what they cost, be well worth the time investment.

Sidenote: Triflow Lubricant is the shiznit for suspension rod ends, be it links or shock eyes. Can find in high end bike shops or order online in areosol containers, spraying the heims down whenever they start getting chatty.

Carried in last couple of rigs and lessened the race car noises to a bearable level, without any residue for crap to stick to. (Used on dune quads for years and sand wouldn't stick if applied under the right conditions).

What Chris said…

It looks like in your pictures the dual rate slider is missing on your shocks.

Looks like they're in line and the dual rate slider is there. Not all dual rate sliders are the same.

Very well may be but the dual rate sliders don’t look like my Sway-a-ways, I’m certainly not an expert but mine are not noisy and again it's hard to tell from his picture but this picture may provide some help to the OP.

My front and rear Sway-a-ways.

I do have limiting straps on both axles and even under the most extreme articulation, I've not seen the spring sets separate. The dual rate sliders on my coilovers just seem pretty malleable. They seem to be deforming over time but units were noisy from the start. Might be just a bad batch. Contacting SwayAway and potentially replacing the sliders sounds to me like a good place to start. Thanks to everyone who posted pics. Certainly has helped me get my head around this issue.

I agree that may be a large contributing factor. Mine seem to have settled out of alignment.

Just a PSA:

I contacted Sway A Way regarding the rubbing coils on the shock body and received an interesting response...

Hi Ben:

We sold the shock division to AFE Power. They can help you.
I copied this to them.

old tired coils that are deforming..

get new coils and they won't deform as badly. Although I'm surprised that the Eibachs are doing that at all..
