right. im going to have everything out of the truck to rebuild the case. so i can replace the shaft then?

Noise is probably not coming from the shaft. The noise is coming from the input shaft bearing, which you would be able to replace if the transmission is out of the truck. To replace the shaft, you'd have to disassemble the entire transmission, which you probably don't want to do.
