Ok guys. My 2006 LC is making a popping and crackling type noise that's coming from underneath the vehicle. Nothing leaking, it's been serviced every 5k at Toyota dealership with 90k service just completed. Truck has 91k miles on her. It's not noticeable from inside while driving, or even when stopped somewhere with windows up. I notice it most when I pull into the garage, park it and get out. Any ideas? Is this normal?

Hey mine does that too and I've always wondered can anyone shed light :)

Sent from my iPhone, please embrace the typos

Heat shield, squirrel, cat, mouse, headers? Those would be my guesses.

If it helps, it sounds like its coming from about the middle of the vehicle. Right about where the front and rear doors meet.

As the exhaust system cools, the different metals contract at different rates and make popping noises as they interact with each other. My guess is that the popping you hear is coming from the catalytic converters or the heat shields, which are located about in the middle of the vehicle, but it could be any parts where dissimilar metals are in contact with each other and heat. I think it is normal for exhaust systems to make a little bit of popping noise as they cool, and it is nothing to worry about as long as the engine runs okay and the check engine light is not illuminated. hope this helps.

I second the rattling heat shield. I assume you are talking about a noise with the vehicle running, right?

Thanks for the replies. No, actually it makes the noise after I've parked and the vehicle is off. I first noticed the noise when I pulled into my garage, parked and turned off the vehicle to go inside. I'm sure it makes the noise while vehicle is running, I just can't hear it.

The vehicle is cooling. Metal cools at different rates depending on material, thickness, and location relative to the engine. The popping after you shut the truck off is normal. All cars do that. The metal is contracting.

thx for the report... all is well ;)

Thanks! I thought that might be the case, I've just never notice it on my wife's honda pilot. Feel much better now. Plus, dealership has never mentioned it when I've had it in for service.
