My engine check light came on, so I tried the Te1 to E1 jumper trick but the engine check light didn't flash at all. So wondering if there is another trick that I can apply. Yes, I have searched but without luck (admittedly my search abilities are suspect) and I know I can rent a OBD II scanner from Autozone. I'm just looking for a pointer before I head out to the local Autozone.

I don't think you need to rent one; pretty sure they'll pull the codes for you right there in the lot.

That diagnostic port jumper shows brake and traction codes. It does not display check engine codes like the old OBDI system. Now if your ABS and traction control lights are on it will tell you by code if it is a wheel speed sensor, brake light, etc. However, it does not give a code for let's say misfire cylinder one. Just to clarify you need to jump Tc to E1.
