I hope my fellow LC nuts don't mind a non-Toyota post, but I have tried to get help from a CR-V forum and they frankly don't have the mechanical knowledge that other forums do, particularly this one.

I have an '01 CR-V that clicks when accelerating, but stops when you are cruising or decelerating. Normally I associate this noise with a bad CV joint, but this should be with the wheels turned on a sharp angle. The noise in the CR-V occurs when going straight ahead.

Ideas? It is hard to discern where exactly the noise is coming from.

Could be a bad CV. If the balls or races are worn they can click going straight.

Could also be something in the trans.

Is it a awd CRV? have you checked the rear drive shaft?

Thanks for the reply. It is AWD, and have not checked the rear drive shaft. It does sound like it is coming towards the front of the vehicle though. I'm going to try and nail down where it's coming from this afternoon.

And yikes, I don't want to hear about the transmission.

If it is coming from the rear of the vehicle and is more pronouced at slow speeds. It is likely the rear diff and it may just need the rear diff service, if you have never done so.

If coming from the front it sounds more like axle/transmission. You might just check to make sure something foreign (smal limb or other road debris) hasn't been picked up.

Definitely not coming from the rear...surely front.

And to clarify, the real story is that I just sold this to a very good friend of mine with the caveat that there was some clicking from the front that I was fairly certain was a bad CV that I would help him replace.

We went for a drive in it today and the click had evolved into a certain thump with shimmy in the wheel. I suspected loose lug nuts or a wheel bearing, but jacking it up today I could find no slop. I have never seen a CV exhibit any kind of shimmy, but Chilton's indicates that can be the case. Regardless, it is pretty severe.

Do you guys think that this can be anything other than a drive axle? Bearings and loose lug nuts have been eliminated.

Thanks as always.
