the story so far... glow plug indicator spontaneoulsly disentegrated last week at the mountain, and blew black fusible link at left (drivers) side battery. i jumped both connections and was able to get it started and drove home. the next day i tried the same thing and it started and ran so i let it warm up, but came back out to find it had stalled. have since discovered that glow plugs are working well(20.5 v at the bus bar and all plugs ohm out well, visually checked and they get red hot) but there is no fuel at the inlet to primer. working back along the line i found what i think to be the low pressure transfer pump on the left frame rail behind the vaccuum reservoir for power brakes. it looks like a pump with an inlet and outlet and two wires running into the top. the line from the tank has lots of fuel but i think the pump is not running. checked voltage on a green with white stripe wire and found .7 v when cranking.
so, does anyone know how this pump receives power? what should the voltage be and when should it be there(run and crank)? if this is tied into the edic function i have seen that the motor works well, moving the pump through crank, run and stop.
hope you can help,
chris

I used to have an bj42 and I think that the thing you are describing is the fuel/water separator. If I recall correctly it has a float in it that sets off a light (the filter light) in the cab. I dont recall there being a low pressure transfer pump, but this does not mean that there isnt one. How did you conlcude that there is no fuel to the pump? Did you open up the line and try to crank? I dont think that this will work. I would drain the water separator then prime the system all the way up to the injectors using the prime pump and clean off any fuel from the injectors. Then open the nut on one of the injectors and crank. If fuel comes out at the injector fuel is not your problem. The separator may be linked to the edic system, but I dont recall. I would dig into why your fusible link popped b/c this is what caused the issues that got you onto this path.

Not knowing where you live, your fuel lines might have frozen or become blocked or let go somewhere. I don't think the fuel/water seperator (what you refer to as low pressure transfer pump) comes apart, you might try draining the water and possibly blowing in the inlet line to see if it is clear. If the fuel/water separator is clear, then you might want to check the line back to the tank.

thanks for the help, i am probably confused as this is a new vehicle for me. sounds like what i found on the frame rail is a separator. in this case is there no transfer pump? does the injection pump draw fuel from the tank?
i will try to prime the system tonight. is the primer lever supposed to turn and then pop up creating a plunger?
does it seem odd that it stalled suddenly. i know that a breakdown could occur anytime on a old vehicle like this, but i thought there might be a relation to the glow plug problems. i had no problems with fuel delivery until now.

Yes, the primer pump does twist counter clockwise and then pops up.

Is you fuel gauge working? It might be something as simple as low fuel.

Check your oil level, as the diesel engine will shut off automatically if it senses no oil pressure.

with all that electrical bad s*** happening, is the edic controller working? ( whizjammer aft of the fuel pump that looks like a wiper motor with a rod going to the pump. it's what shuts the engine off....) easy test, pop the arm off the pump, and see if it'll start then. you'll have to move the arm by hand to shut it off again.....

cheers,
ryan

problem solved:
hole in union rail caused by pipe bracket for coolant hose touching glow plug bus bar and shorting on the rail.
so diesel's pretty hard to ignite eh? gasoline would have likely started a fire.
it's running with a small hose in place while i await a new fuel rail.
now where was i.....?
