I just got my 73' FJ-40 back. I had discs installed front and rear. I have no brake lights. On the new master cylinder there are 2 switchs. I remember a wire going to each switch ( on the master cylinder itself). I am not sure what these 2 switches are that are on the master cylinder. The running lights and the turn signal lights work. I know that one wire to the brake light switch on the pedal should be hot. When the pedal is pushed, it completes the circuit to the brake lights. What are the colors of the wires? What is the purpose of the switches on the master cylinder? Thanks in advance for helping me. I am jsut getting my 40 back on the road after 10 years!! I cant wait to hit some trails. I just dont want any tickets! Jeff West

i'm pretty sure the switches on the master cylinder are breake pressure switches, that illuminate if fluid is low or gone...

Have tried to operate the switch manually to see if that will light your brake bulbs.
Did the stop lights work before the conversion to discs?
The pedal hight may need adjustment.
AS mentioned above the wires going to the valves under the MC are not part of the stop light circit.
I am not sure of the color of the wires going to the switch, wite/green I believe.
The wiring for your 71 is also more complicated, that is , the stop circit goes through the signal switch.
Do more checking and post some more info, and someone will likely figure out the problem.
It is important to see if you have voltage in both wires going to the stop light switch when it is pressed. Thats where I would start.

Brake lights

Thanks Vicm! It is a 1973 not 1971. The lights were working before the conversion. When I push the pedal, I can hear the switch clicking. Still no lights. I will check for voltage in and voltage out when the pedal is pushed. I dont know if others have had the problem of the rear coming around when brakes are hit hard but that is what mine are doing. I even bought a proportioning valve for them to put in. For some reason it didnt get put in. I would have done all this myself but I became disabled a couple of years ago. Does anyone know exactly where the proportioning valve should be installed? Should it be near the MC on the rear brake line? Any help will help me from getting killed. Thanks, Jeff;p

You are wellcome,
73 and 71 have the same wiring for the stop lights :whoops:.
Even if there is movement in the switch , it might not be enough to make contact.
The proportioning valve is something I have never installed , but I would install it away from dirt and handy for adjustment. Close to the MC.
I am sure someone else will give you a better advice, maybe with some pics.
There might be some pics if you do a search, in the FAQ or the forum.
Meantime , you could post some pics and share your 40 with us,
we love that on this forum. Good luck
Vic

The proportioning valve needs to go in the rear brake line. the best place is near the MC, easy to get to for adjusting. My prop valve was not metric so I cut the line, put the correct fitting on the line and re-flared. I did my initial adjusting on my gravel driveway, then went to pavement.

Sorry, no pics.
