Hey, has anyone tried a Nitto Mud Grapper 35x14.50R15LT on 15x8'' rims? I am looking for an aggressive radial mud terrain to suit a 15x8'' rim in 35'' diameter and the Nitto seems to fit the bill just too wide I think, but I hope.

Currently I run Toyo Open Country MT 35x13.5R15LT on the same 15x8'' rims and they are fine. And from what I can see Toyo and Nitto and very closely related and it would not surprise me if they run the same carcass.

Size details of each are below.

Nitto
Size 35x14.50R15LT
Inflated dia 34.80''
Infalted width 14.57''
Approved rim width 10.0''

Toyo
Size 35x13.50R15LT
Inflated dia 34.8''
Infalted width 14.4''
Approved rim width 8.50-11.0

So the Nitto is only 4mm wider (0.17'') which would be its massive side biters.

So anyone tried it? Unfortunately if I change rims ($$$$ I cannot really afford) I will loose my bead locks. Another tyre I am looking at are 35'' Radial TTC claws, but apprently only a little better than the old claws on side slopes and turning. Any other suggestions welcome.

My Toyo's on 8'' rim

Nittos for reference

I can't imagine it would be appreciably worse than running 10.5" wide tires on 6" wide rims, which a ton of people do with the stock FJ40/60 wheels, without issue.

The main problem with under-width wheels is that it tends to cause the centers to bulge and wear prematurely compared to the sides of the tread (same effect as overinflating your tires), and you can also have some problems with bead retention...

...and, with your beadlocks, and not putting tons of highway miles on them, neither of those should be issues.

The added bonus of this configuration would be that you'll never scrape your wheels on rocks unless you're really trying.

Another factor to consider is finding a shop that'll actually mount them for you. If you know a guy, or do your own mounting, that's a moot point, obviously.
