Nikon SLR lens sticking already.. suggestions?

I bought a Nikon D80 SLR last year and got a VR 18-200mm lens for it.
My friend has an 80 as well with the packaged 18-135mm lens and she had to send it back into Nikon for servicing as it was hanging up/over shooting when the camera tried to focus/adjust it when set to auto.
Is this normal or are these new SLR lenses requiring yearly servicing as all we do is take them hiking treating them rather carefuly?
Just wondering if anyone has experience with this and suggestions?
thanks

The only Nikor (Nikon) Len i have had to send back was one that I dropped. You should not need to do anything to them but keep the glass clean. If it is really dusty, then you need to have it cleaned, but in the 3 years I have owned mine, i have not had any issues.

I have owned Nikons and many of their lenses since the 70's, never had any trouble with any of them, except when I dropped one HARD on pavement.

That being said, I am pretty disgusted with the "package" lenses they include with a lot of their bodies now. We have a D40 at the office with the 18-55 lens and it feels like it was made by Fisher-Price to me. I almost bought a D80 a couple of years ago, and I was also not impressed with that 18-135, I would have upgraded the lens. I ended up buying an older D70 from a friend, and I also have that 18-200 VR, love it.

Not sure where that leaves you, if Nikon is warrantying the lens then I would pursue it. But I see them on craigslist all the time for less than $100, so I would think about upgrading.

I bought the :princess: a d80 last year for an anniversary present. I also sprung for the VR lenses, and I can't tell what, if anything that they do. I can say, however, that they're tough. my 21 month old son (can tear up a crowbar, no really. he can) yanked on the strap and sent the camera flying off of the counter and onto the tile floor. Talk about a heart stopping moment...

picked up the camera, and it was fine.

even after a fall from 3 feet, the camera and lens are fine. As far as the autofocus thing, I have to set the camera to AF AND the lens to AF. the :princess: likes the manual settings. I'm an ID-ten-T when it comes to the manual settings, so I need fully auto.

how long have you had the lens exactly? this has been happening a lot with some of the early gen lenses.
i took mine in, and they exchanged for a new one. wolf camera, where i bought it
hopefully you still have the box. if not, and it's under a year, you should still be covered by mfg. warranty, though that will typically take 6-8 weeks to turn around.

That's good information as mine sticks now and then too. I'll take it down to the local dealer I purchased it from and have a conversation about it. Thanks!
