Nikon D200

well, after a lot of research I splurged and got myself a used D200. That is one hefty hunka camera... Should be plenty of camera and plenty good for my uses. Now to figure out the 200 control buttons and the 5000 menu items...

Got it largely so I could still use my old lenses. That I'm planning to do.

Brace yourselves for some Cruiza and scenery pics coming up on MUD...!

it's more the lenses (old style metal) and the battery grip that do it. Camera itself not too bad, it's magnesium. (Could use it to start a fire if desperate in the snow... )

My personal stuff is all cannon, but we have D200 here at work that I use from time to time. I really like it. It's been flawless with one exception. From time to time it will throw an F error, generally removing the lens and remounting it gets you on your way.

I'm not sure that this is the camera's fault, it could very well be a problem with the Sigma EX lens.

If I didn't have a number of Canon lenses I definitely would consider the D200 body.

I'm not sure that this is the camera's fault, it could very well be a problem with the Sigma EX lens.

If I didn't have a number of Canon lenses I definitely would consider the D200 body.

That error is the lens and not the camera I shoot with a D700 and love it. The 200 ain't too shabby either

I think the 300 is giving still better quality images from what I read (new gen sensor) and has a very nice LCD display. But those are still up there in price. And realistically, whereas I love the gadget side of getting the newfangled techno, the 200 is probably plenty good for me. Soft spot if you like. This thing is built like a tank. Add a vertical grip, a tele, and the crowds part when you walk through... Feels very solid. And the tweaking possibilities are endless.

I may get an AF lens one of these days for the heck of it, but for now, I enjoy using my old glass. Ooooh, old classic Micro Nikkor lenses... Now if only it would accept the pre AI lenses like the 40 etc do, I'd be golden...

Figuring out the menu and buttons won't be that difficult. I made the move from a FM2 to a D300 and there was a bit of a learning curve. I'm using 20 year old lenses with the camera, generally in M or A mode. I've found that I typically get better results in M. For best results, but a bit more work, shoot in raw format (NEF) and process the files with the Capture NX2 software.

It's definitely the Sigma lens. Same problems here--other lenses (mostly Nikkor) work just fine, no problems. Reseating the lens has always done the trick for me.

Other than that, I actually love the weight of the D200 + grip + big lens. I can't hold on to the smaller/lighter cameras as well.

did you see how you can set up the FUNC button and just change the focal length and aperture info for old lenses with just the rotating dials. Very slick! Much nicer than slogging through the menus every time you change lenses.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how good the exposure is in A mode.
