Blew its head gasket on the way home from work last night, just glad it didnt happen out on the trail!
At any rate JJ or Joe or whoever said it, he said if there is further damage then just the gasket he may be turboing sooner then he though and you would get your wish haha.

Keep yah updated we are tearing it off today wish us luck.

Yea, grab a turbo for the 22r(e). That motor responds well to boost!

What was the history again on his truck? The guy he bought it from did a rebuild with a carb intake? If thats the case, it would seem to me that the PO only changed gaskets and such, but didn't check/deck the block and head. Can't remember but is the block iron, aluminum head?

Haha I knew you would say that JJ, I am pushing it too lol.

Story on the truck is.... the guy rebuilt it with his dad "for fun" or learning or something. At any rate I think you are right JJ, and yes its got a webber on it. I am pretty sure A. they didnt use a oem gasket and B. they didnt check it. It was warped some but savable, It was a ALU head. Oh and the truck came with pretty much every spare engine part you could think of even a block (except a head and fuel pump go figure the two things we have come across possibly needing)

We pulled it today only took a little over a hour pretty simple. Dropped it off at napa machine shop they got it done in a few hours and he put in a order for a oem gasket set that should be there by now. So tomorrow he will grab everything and if we have time we will throw it on, fill her up with oil and tranny fluid for a flush then drain and repeat. hopfully everything goes as smooth as it did today, his other truck is getting dropped off at his uncles shop for a heater core tomorrow (quoted 7 hours out of the book what a flipp'n joke) so he has no truck, kind of bad timing.

I've seen non oem head gaskets stacked (2) for back yard turbo applications (shady-tree work son!) to lower compression with intent to boost in the 12-15 lbs range. Rods would give out before the verenable head gasket(s) failed from shady-ness.

I wouldn't think, IMO, using a non-oem gasket would be critical. The material in today's 'head gaskets' currently sold don't use the old 'hybrid' materials that were/are prone to heat temp failures from the 80's and late 90's (standard iron block/aluminum head). Unless you use a blow-through carb and stack head gakets and boost it til kingdom come! :clap: .... you should be fine to get back onto the road with a NAPA equivalent. There is a security though in knowing that the oem gasket(s) or equivalent(s) are manufactured accordingly.

Shoot, you have the front cover off, might as well check the slack guides and t-chain for slack/wear. The guides were plastic in certain/early years and not are always interchangable (different blocks) with a 22r-e. Check that engine code/stamp and head code/stamp to make sure you are buying and dealing with parts for that block/head mounted in the truck. Only saying and not knowing, because the history is somewhat a mystery and wouldn't want to be revisiting an area after fixing it ... my $.02 :meh:
 
The chain is supprisingly tight he must have done it with the rebuild, I will double check the plastic guides with a flashlight but from a glance they looked better the last set I saw... 10 years ago.

Sure thing; if they are plastic and look brittle/worn then you know whats up. Otherwise, if he addressed the t-chain, hopefully the guides were good to go at that time and still are.
 
Nick wanted to personally thank you guys for the information and willingness to help! he thought that was awesome.

We weren't able to get started till close to 5 tonight, a little later then I had hoped but we finished up around 7:30 and took her for a test drive, everything went well, most of the time seemed spent scraping the dang block. We had to do the timing by ear because I forgot my timing light but easy enough to come back to when we change/flush the oil.

What do you guys think of these cylinder walls? not even broke in yet? some picks of the guide too, didn't even look worn.

Lc engineering sells the aluminum guides and thicker racing head gasket. I had a lc motor in my ol runner and worked good in my stage 5 motor.

Looks like it was just honed. If the chain is tight and the guides are good to go, run it!

Quick work too, maybe I'll drop mine off to the two of you with a list ;)
