Armed with my '92 Toyota LC manual, proper tools but too little knowledge, I removed the right axle from the front differential. Some background:
While off-roading the frontend slid sideways with the rear acting as a pivot. This involved sliding on some uneven ledge, earth and boulders. The result was a heck of a clunking from the front and grinding when later attempting to switch from low to hi range. Had the LC ramp trucked home.
Pull the right side apart per the manual and various reviews of this forum. That went slow and okay. What I found was the splines on the end of the axle that go into the front differential are rounded over. This is where I am lost. Does this mean I need to remove the differential since the (I don't know the name of the receiving or mating gear) axle would indicate a matching stripped gear inside? Is it possible that the splines of the axle are softer and intended to strip leaving the gear in the differential okay?

The other thing I noticed is the diff oil, that I had filled after recently purchasing the LC is now like tar, smells burned and had a fair amount of minute metal pieces.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Yes, you need to take out the differential and replace the side gear(s). The housing will need to be flushed out to remove all evidence of metal particles. You will have to locate a new shaft from somewhere (I can't remember if just one, or both sides are unique to the 70 series -given that you don't have a light duty unit).

Your oil has issues... could be grease in the oil, or oil that's been overheated and/or contaminated. Check your diff bearing preloads and condition before re-installation.
