Newbie Steering Column Cover Question

I'm a brand new 1993 80 owner (used to be LR Defender addict). This site has been a great help replacing my leaky valve cover gasket already and I am still figuring it all out (I hope I'm posting this in the right place).
Mine came to me with a loose cover over the steering column behind the steering wheel. Seems I have a few screws loose. The cover is mated together well but it rattles--anyone have dimensions for me on the screws that secure the cover onto the column? Hoping to avoid the dealership. Any help?
 
I think you HAD a few screws loose until you ditched the LR!

ALthough I don't know the sizes off the top of my head, you shouldn't need to make a trip to the dealer for the fasteners.
 
I had a hell of a time finding these screws... I ordered a couple from Dan but there werent the right ones....... :doh: finally ended up buying the bottom cover with screws from Crusier Parts...
 
I think 90164-50048 x2 is what you would need from the dealer.

Assuming you have cruise control (I think all US models did) the pn for the cover is 45286-60940-01, but I don't think it is still available.
 
Typically the inside mounting bosses on the lower half of the cover are broken. This usually happens when you wack it with your knee when you try to exit the vehicle after your wife has moved the driver's seat forward when she moved the truck. :doh:

The "correct" fix is to replace the cover assembly.
 
I used a bunch of epoxie on the inside of my newly purchased column cover to strenghthen it before installation.

I tried Jb weld like the jiggly mirror fix there, and resorted to a couple wraps of black tape after I hit the thing again with my knees.

I just had the same experience -- broken steering shroud on a 94. I started out thinking that I was just missing the screws, but upon closer examination, noticed that the screws were there but the plastic wasn't.

It's under "steering column". You can order both or a top or bottom separately.

Getting the bottom one off is not trivial because of the cruise control lever.

There are 3 screws on the bottom (connecting the bottom to the column) and two connecting the top to the bottom. All five had the plastic trashed on mine. I started to fix the top piece but the ripped out plastic on the bottom led me to just buy a new cover.

Shipping is $10. I just ordered it today.

I've owned it since 96 and it was fine for the first decade. A replacement should last a while.

The only down side is to many tempting ways to spend money that I had never imagined.
 
My column actually is missing all the screws(5). Does anyone have the specs on the screws needed?
 
I just stuck a couple pieces of foam inside mine to stop the rattle. It works most of the time ;)
 
I second the foam if its rattling. Mine f'ed up on a 6000km road trip and I used some band aids from my kit to tape it back together. Next hardware store I passed I picked up a roll of electrical tape and used that. Its still holding everything together today.
