Hey - I'm new to the Landcruisers, just have a couple quick questions. I am set on getting a 80-86 bj60 w/ 3b diesel. I realize these things tend to run forever but what kind of average mileage can I expect. My budget allows for around the $4000 (Can) mark and around the 300-400,000 kms. Also I don't even know if these have timing belts or gears or ?... Whats the service interval for these? Anybody happen to know of any good deals around Vancouver BC? Thanks for your time.

I wouldnt fall for the old "they can run forever line"
At 3-400000 klms they wont have too many klms left in them.
There is a chance if its been a one owner and meticulosly cared for but they are rare.
Your looking at a 20-25 yo vehicle with who knows how many owners and I think it would be irresponsible for members on this forum not to point it out.

If the budget wont stretch to a rebuild in the near future you may be in over your head.
If the engine has had a quality rebuild with proof then thats another matter.

Really good point Ross. I have run into young blokes here who went into considerable hock for a cruiser then copped a $41/2 to $51/2 thousand for an engine rebuild or $2,000 to $2,500 for a transmission replacement. Turns the dream sour pretty quick.

Yeah I guess we have all been stuck with a POS sometime in our lives.
Even if a diesel seems ok with high miles as soon as you start working it hard it loses power, either in the compression chamber or in the pump, or worse both.

And of course the drive train is another matter

300-400,000 kms is about the outside limit of any Toyota I know before heavy duty repair spending is needed. Fact of the matter is that any and all cars are composed of a lot of parts and any of them can give any time especially if they have been in service for a very long time.

Don't buy an old car unless you have cash left over for repairs. The older and higher mileage cars usually need a lot more cash. If you do buy an old car, make absolutely sure the thing is broken before you fix it. A lot of cash is wasted on repairs that are not needed.
