My father in interesting in purchasing a 02 or 03 LC for cruising Baja. Narrow two lane roads with frequent oncoming tractor trailers. Steering precision is very helpful in those situations.

According the the Slee 100 series newbie guide the steering went from rack and pinion to variable gear in 2003. Is that correct and if so is the difference notable. My father prefers a stiffer and precise steering over plush and vague.

I own an '02 and have had no issues with the steering feel. I think the massive weight of the vehicle itself makes it extremely stable in crosswinds. However, if had a choice between a 2002 and 2003, I would choose the '03, not for the steering rack change, but for the change in transmission , from the four speed to five. You will pay a little more, but it'll be worth it.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that the 5 speed was the way to go from another person who has the 2002. Sounds like I have to start my search for an '03.

Yes the difference is very noticeable and yes you are aright, in 2003 they included VGRS. I even notice it when I get into the S5 and it doesn't have it.

Would you say its a good thing or a bad? Again, my dad preference is towards a little stiff and very accurate. His favorite steering currently is that in his F150 truck which is think is a 2005. Although I am not sure if that is r&p or not.

Do you notice in mainly at the grocery store (typically variable is pronounced at slow speed from my experience) or is a lot different on the highway and country type roads?

Thx for the input.

We have a friend of a friend with an 02. Pop's will just need to test drive it and then find a 03 to drive. If its minimal difference at speed and you are getting the benefit of the 5 speed tranny then the 2003 may be the way to go.

It's very noticeable when maneuvering below 40mph.
