First let me say I know more about ....well just about anything, than I do about auto repair. Still, I love my 1984 FJ60, which I just got.

One weird anomoly....when the temperature control is on 'cold' - silence. When I move the control over to 'warm', I get a gurgling sound behind that sounds like it is coming from the dash. It get more pronounced as the engine revs higher.

Naive question of the day: Anybody know what this is, or is caused by?

Thanks in advance. I am pretty excited about this truck (hopefully nobody is going to say that the gurgling means it is going to blow up or anything....).

Also have a 95 LC that looks and runs showroom new. That is my wife's DD.

Thanks,
Mike

I know your problem exactly. You have air in your cooling system. The cause is virtually always a bad radiator cap. With a good cap, you will quickly purge all the air out of your system.

Do this-Get a new cap and install. For the first 10 minutes of every day, run with your heater all the way on hot. Keep your overflow full (that's important). If it doesn't solve your gurgling, it's time to look for other problems. I'll bet a new cap and a full overflow will solve it in short order.

BTW-Air in the system will tend to make the temp read high.

One thing to add to what Cruiserdrew said - make sure it's an OEM cap!

Yeah, what they said. Air bubbles in the cooling system.

Some of my FJ60s have always done it, and some have never made the sound.

Check/replace rad cap, make sure radiator and overflow jug are full. The heater hose pulls hot water off the *Highest* point of the cooling system, so it naturally collects any/all air bubbles in the system. Mine always did it worst when the heater valve was opened after being closed a few days. If noise persists, I wouldn't worry about it much.

We've taken to calling it "the squirrels in the dashboard" noise.:D

Thank You!!!

Thank you so much. I have spent several weeks digging through this site and what a great resourse. I need to figure out how to contribute some dough.

Thanks again - Mike

Wow, my 62 just started making this funky sound - especially when it's cold and first starting... Now I know what to look for. Cool.
