I have an 86 60 and like it a lot. (love it) The girlfreind found a 1992 owned by an old lady who reluctantly is giving it up for a Honda Pilot or something like that.

LC has 165k miles, new tranny and cat conv, brakes all around, and it looks like they saved every receipt from oil changes, etc. (retired couple)

Is there anything I should be looking at or checking out?

She's asking $6k but may take lower. I think it is a fair price. Body and interior look really good, but I am just used to my 86 60 with the usual age/rust, etc.

I am assuming the life expecancy of this year/model is in line with the others - 200k+ or more with no real issues.

Sorry, no pics yet. If I get it I will surely post.

Any comments? Issues to know about? Price reasonable? To me it seems ok. The GF doesn't have the cash and may want to buy my 60 and I might buy the 1992, but I am not sure how I like that propsect. Maybe we can work out joint custody or something.

I know this is really a personal decision, but I am asking for any feedback about this year vehicle and the price/milage/condition.

thanks,
tim

Tim,

The 92 is pretty bulletproof. Lazy unstressed 4.0L 6, tranny built for several times the engine's power, and easy to work on just like your 60. My single concern would be what's the story with the tranny, which should easily reach 300k with even crappy maintenance. Who installed it? Was it a factory refurbished or new unit, or from a junkyard? What happened to the old one?

When I hear "excellent maintanance" and "new tranny" on a low mile LandCruiser my antennae go up. Otherwise you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with this rig.

Thanks Doug - I have the same concerns regarding the recent work- I tried to get the GF to ask questions, but I will have to go check it out myself. The only answer I got was "they drive it to Canada a lot" (we're in southern NY area)

I will find out who replaced the tranny, etc. I suspect it was the dealer, but of course I will need to see all those receipts. Thanks again. (Now I have to figger out where to get the cash from as I don't want to sell the 60 to get this one. Insuring all these cars is getting to be nutty too...)

I'd be suspect of the old lady unless she's of course a LITTLE old lady who drove it to church on Sunday.....In that event I would buy it unseen. good luck and don't let the old lady pinch your cheek, they'll do that you know.....

why for that truck needed new tranny?....

If the dealer replaced it, then I'd be MUCH more confident of the replacement tranny. Driving it to Canada a lot would actually be a good thing since this means freeway miles which are way easier on every single component from seats to running gear. Still would want to know why tranny was replaced.

All,

I will post with what I find out and thanks for the warning on the old lady and cheek pinching - I'll make sure I have someone to watch my back in case she gets out of line.

I will get to the bottom of the tranny issue before purchasing. FJ60 to 80 - movin' on up - stylin' now! I might even have to get spinners for the wheels!

I just bought my 92 fj80 in Feb. of this year.
It had 135k miles on it and I paid like 5800.oo.
So it sounds like a good deal to me.
The only other cruiser that I have owned was a 1987 fj60.
I liked my 60 but I like the 80 more.(more comforts)
The only problem I have had with mine so far is the
birfs need to be redone and it needs some new brakes.
Most maint. on these vehicles I think is brakes about
every 15k miles or so.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out ;)

I bought the LC for the girlfriend - got a really nice deal (I know - still need to get pics up here otherwise it is worthless) The woman accepted $5000, but later seemed to have seller's remorse - see chat section for more details.

I asked about the tranny - she said she just wanted to have it replaced before anything happened. I kept asking about it and she said she had no bad tranny symptoms but that she wanted to avoid any probs. Oh well. Weird.
