I've been bitten by the bug and am wanting to get a 40.

I've found a '69 locally which looks pretty good (to my untrained eye). It's pretty much all stock/original and the frame and sheet metal look good. (Minor rust on rain gutter and rear under license plate.)

One concern I have is that it's been repainted a darker metallic blue. They also coated pretty much the entire interior with textured stuff.

So, my questions:

  • What does the repaint/interior coating do the the value?
  • If I wanted to re-paint it to the original or another OEM color in the future, will it require extra work due to the metallic paint?
  • Any other issues/thoughts/concerns I should know or look into?

Thanks!

I'm not looking to massively restore or heavily modify it at this point. But I try to keep my cars for a long time.

That blue decreases the value of the truck.

Looks like the dash is an original blue though, probably smurf blue. Door panels can be fixed and the top should be white.

The guy selling may not think the color devalues the truck though.

Depends on what you mean by "devalue." If you're looking at the FJ40 as an investment, I'd reconsider. If you're looking for a vehicle to wheel, a non-standard color isn't going to make much difference if the paint and bodywork was done well. I wouldn't let the seller try to argue that the "custom" paint increases the value, though.

Repainting to an original color isn't necessarily going to mean stripping to bare metal unless (again) the paint and bodywork wasn't done well.
