Had the windshield installed today 'cuz the old one was cracked and very pitted and was driving me nuts. There are a few threads on replacement, but none have all the info in one place, and since some materials have changed or become NLA, I'd thought I update the info and post the process here. Also, this THREAD is my futile search for a quality non-Chinese window. OE Toyota glass at roughly $1100 was not in da budget.

First of all, if you're in or anywhere near Los Angeles, I HIGHLY recommend :

Proprietor is Dirk C. Dirk does the windows for TLC4x4 (his shop is just down street), and is familiar with the windshield pitfalls and quirks for the various Land Cruiser series. If you have a 40, 60/62, 80 series or whatever, Dirk is your man. Very nice guy and took his time to explain what he was doing and why, and why he takes steps the come-to-your-house installers don't. And Dirk had no problems letting me take pix and document the install. And after watching Dirk take 2.5 hours to do the window, I was sure glad I did not try to install the used window I have myself. Chances are very good I would have broken it.

ALSO, if you say you're from MUD, Dirk will pay your sales tax !!

1- Old windshield (not OE)
2- Dirk cutting out old gasket
3- Da beast with her antenna up, shorn of gasket

I asked Dirk to use the OE gasket I had already bought.

I wanted to de-chrome the gasket so had him order Precision locking strip WLS466.

Window removed

Shizzle ! Rust !!

1- Wire-wheeling rust spots.

2- !%!%$#@ RUST !! If I had been at home I would have welded the holes, but there was no welder at the shop... He said holes would be filled with urethane anyway, so...

3- Brushing on rust converter and some kind of encapsulator. He really took his time here and even let the stuff dry correctly.

:)

More rust converter then a bit of waiting until it turns black.

I wanted glass with the shade screen at the top and this was the only one available of good quality, according to Dirk. PWG and Pilkington also make glass for 60s but without the tint.

2- installing gasket.

3- Urethane on inner lip after roping the gasket.

1- Close on bead of Urethane on lip

2- Roped.

3- Baby's getting new specs !

1- Profile of locking strip... This strip was a GIANT PITA to install and Dirk said he'd never use it again. :D

2- Pulling the rope.

3- Centering the glass.

1-Locking strip installed after 1.5 hrs !!!

2-Final Urethane between glass and gasket...

3 - Done !! (wipers were removed to aid installation and I left them off to paint them)

Final thoughts:

Installation of the OE gasket and aftermarket lock strip was a giant GIANT PITA. Really. So much so that Dirk said he'd never do one again. Either use the OE chrome moldings or the aftermarket self-locking gasket from Precision. He was right.

If I were going to do this again I'd use the aftermarket gasket as it cuts the install time by half and it's half the cost of the OE gasket, plus you don't have the cost of the lock strip or new OE chrome moldings as you will not be able to get them out without buggering them. Quality and fit of the aftermarket gasket seemed to be the same and Dirk said he has installed dozens of them with no issues so there's really no advantage to the OE unless you insist on having it Toyota - but then you might as well get OE glass at $1100 !!

This is the part # for the aftermarket gasket as he had one in the shop.

Hope this info helps someone.

:hmm:

So I got to ask... what is the penny for? Good luck that it stays?

Just as a size comparison in the picture, but hey, I'll take all the good luck I can get!

Nice write up! Now I got to call my glass shop... too bad I'm too far away from Dirk...

awesome! thanks for sharing...what was the cost involved?

Under $300 (EDIT: That is with me supplying the window gasket. If you go with the aftermarket gasket, expect about $60 more. W/ OE gasket, around $100 more and whatever the new chrome molding will cost... )

He struggled so much with it, I gave him an extra $20 for lunch! :D

Forgot to mention how much of a pleasure it is to have the new glass. It was really really getting hard to see with the pitted glass, particularly when the sun hit it just right...

Great improvement - Now I'm pissed I waited so long.

Nice job.
I remember when me and my buddy replaced mine.
He jammed his fat elbow into my precious dash pad speaker surface.

The 56121-90A04 is the OE part # but it's been superceeded to 56121-90A05 as in the pic in post 2. I just went to the Precision Replacement Parts website (prp.com) and the new part # for the gasket without locking strip is WBL F425 . Your local glass shop can supply it.

So the OE locking strip you used is the one that's UNDER the chrome molding pieces?
