New warn winch. How can I use without a remote? (1 Viewer)

Last week, I picked up a older warn 8k winch model- mx8000. I think it is a predecessor to the m8000. It's in very good condition and I got the remote with it.

But is there any way I can use this winch without the remote? I thought you could just turn the handle on winch to power out/in and it would do so, but it looks like the only way to control the winch is through the remote.

Is there a different fitting I can attach to the solenoid box or something? Right now there is only the plug for the remote.

Maybe I am overlooking something. I don't know much at all about winches.

Also, how should I go about water poofing the winch? Can I drill out a drain and fill plug for the motor housing so I can change the oil? Any other tips?

Thanks for the link and post but what I'm looking for is something like a lever on the winch that you put in the "power in position" and it will start winching. Maybe I was not clear in my initial post.

In addition to the remote, I'd like a way to make the winch power in by a control mounted actually on the winch or solenoid box without messing with any kind of remote at all.

What would be perfect would be if the lever on the winch that switches between free spool and locked, would have a position that would actually start the winch pulling in the line.

Does this exist on any winches?

I figured they all worked like and the remote was just a luxury.

No, its a bad idea, While your using your winch, you should be away from the winch..

Why would you want to be in the way of your truck while your trying to get un-stuck? That and the safety of being out of harms way if the cable breaks, or something gives.

12 Volt Guy has very cool In cab Controls that you can mount to your dash, this way you are out of harms way, and you can control the truck at the same time!

ahh.. missed your intent. I guess you could do the same thing with the in-cab control switches (or use a lever-actuated switch) but mount the controls near the winch. I would surmise the point of the remote is to separate your body from the winch for safety purposes.

If you do this, think about adding a disconnect between the battery and the winch lest the cretins of the world decide to use your winch as a crushing device for your vehicle. Heard of but might be urban legend to run the winch line to the rear bumper and short out the controls to crush the roof/hood.

the lever you're referring to is the freespooling lever. You do not want to be next to the winch when using it and reaching in there to turn it on or off would be very dangerous. there is a way to operate the einch without the solenoid box by jumpering one of the Field posts with the Armature post and then applying power to the other Field post. That would be the only way to operate it directly at the winch.
