Parents just a bought an 84 fj60 in Alturas for $1000. Here is the link to the Craiglist Ad 84 toyota landcruiser fj 60

I found it in the Medford Craigslist and tried to Email the guy. He never responded. So being that I grew up in Alturas, I took the picture from the Ad, and was able to find out where it was taken. Knocked on his door, and the rest is history.

The plan is to some what restore so that Mom can drive it in the winter. It won't pass smog, so that will be the first line of attack. Dad plans on me doing the work that I can handle. If that don't work out then I got some parts for mine. It will be stored at my house while I slowly fix some issues. Needs the front end rebuilt, will need a paint job. There is some rust, but from what I can tell it can be fixed and is not that major. Anyways just another cruiser in the family, we will see how it goes.

Way to go! More Cruisers in the family is always a good thing.

I think I saw that one start at 2500. Nice buy. I'd offer you my spare smog parts but you got most of them already! I think we will round up a McGrew shirt for you too.
Do you have a full on smog/smog equipment check or just a emissions test?

It is just an emissions test. Talking with the guy it failed a pretest, so I'm not sure how far off it is. Could be a matter of a tune up, new plugs wires, timing. If we do get this smogged I might be picking your brain for the desmog. Maybe a wrenching party or something. Once I get it smogged I don't have to smog it again, since I live in the normal part of California. My parents pick it up Monday.

I've found most 'cruisers get neglected or mis-wrenched and still keep going. You will probably find multiple factors that will contribute to emissions failure- tired carb, bad plugs/wires, valves out of adjustment, timing, intake/exhaust leaks, t-stat, CAT and dead smog junk.
Just what you needed, another rig to fix!

Oh yeah, I have two 2.5" lift springs for $250 if the guy who is buying my white rig doesn't want them. Rear only.

So in Kalifornia don't they pay you $2,000.00 if your rig fails smog? Yes I know it would suck to loose a cruiser I'm just saying that double your money for get it a smog test isn't bad. (unless that was just a promo, or county thing?)

Did you get the pre test form? If it wan't too bad I used to get my Sami to pass by just running it hard for the drive to the smog station. The high heat and flow kind of "purged the system" enough for it to pass. Good luck :)

Well I learned a lesson today. Don't get to excited until the money and title changes hands. The owner backed out this morning. Not sure why. Anyways I'm now looking for a 60, or 62 for the parents. They have decided that they want something in a little better shape, so are willing to spend more. The one requirement I'm looking for is that it must pass our smog requirements, that's it. Everything else will just be gravy.

$5,200 seems kinda steep to be honest. You can get a 1FZ 80 for that price......

Better be 99.9% rust free for that price. Check the rear fender well lip closely and follow it down the the rear doors. Make sure no bubbles. Open front doors and look where the door seals close on the cab, follow from roof down to bottom of windshield and check for bubbles. Check the oil pan to see how bad it's leaking, I have never seen one not leaking, just make sure it's not nasty. If you see rust in these areas or others point it out, the owner might not know. I had a friend bring over a 80 series to check out, I found a roof leak and some rust. They took back to the owner and pointed it out and said no thanks. The owner "claims" they didn't even know about that. :meh:

Not trying to burst your bubble, just make sure you at least get a FAIR deal, which is both you and the seller walking away happy.

I spoke with the guy for almost an hour on the phone and seemed to be very up front up the details of the truck. The rust that he talks about is near the windshield, I don't know how bad until I see it. He was the third owner and the truck has been in cali the whole time. The thing a like about the truck from what i can tell in the pictures, is that it appears to have been maintained, and meaning the interior appears to be in great shape. That's the area that I think is the tell tell sign in the condition of a vehicle. The reason I think that is because if you have an individual that maintains the inside of the vehicle where they sit and use all the time, then it will be carried out through the rest of the vehicle. My 2 cents. The price is a little high, but it is in the ball park in what the parents what to spend. Are they going to get a good deal compared to the last one, I don't know. That is up to them. The other good thing is, I'm by far not :banana::banana::banana: guy, more of a  guy and my father is not even close to the one bananna so to find a vechicle with the mileage it has is a plus. Well see today. Josh

I'm just saying you can find a vehicle with the same mileage that's 6-10 years newer, for the same price.

If you really want a 60, that's cool, and that might be worth it to you. Personally, I wouldn't take a 60 over an 80 all else being equal (price, mileage, condition, etc). But that's just me. YMMV. :meh:

Glad owner disclosed the rust to you, the windshield area can be a tricky one to repair if the rust has eaten into the channel where the windshield gasket resides, believe me I know. If it rust on the clip below the windshield is on the clip that has the vents then that's probably easily swapped out. Just really try to examine the rust areas and see if you can find the back side of the metal to see what that looks like, not usually possible though.

Hmmm.. I'd stay away from rust around the windshield. I had/have a '62 with a few bubbles around the windshield. I sold to a guy, he wrecked after having it for a year and the little rust bubble turned out to be pretty major. It was fixable but should have been addressed or it just gets worse.
Price is too high. I would shop around and not be in a hurry. If you want to spend a lot of money buy my tan 60! How about $8k ;).. Be patient you will find a good deal.

I loved my first LC, a 85 60 series. Still miss that old beast.
However, I love my 80 even more. Not old school like the 60(and I say that with respect and love for the 60 series) but with all the modern creature comforts many people like.
Does you mom still like the stick shift?
I also concur on the price, for $5K + you could score a sweet 80. If you're into that.
Good luck, you picking a Land Cruiser. Can't go wrong.
