In about a week I'm buying either a 99 ( with some rust underneath) or a 2000. I'm not going to make this rig a super rock crawler or anything like that. I'm looking to make it quite off road capable, but its also going to be my daily driver. So I'm not trying to lift it real high or get gigantic tires (I was thinking 285's). I also wanted to upgrade the suspension and add a winch and a spare tire carrier. So, how would I start and where would I start?

And no offense but I'm only looking for advice from people who know what they are talking about, I came here to learn.

I look forward to your comments and tips.

Agree with @HDJ101, there are many different directions you can go with the suspension so we'd just be guessing what is a good fit for you.

Questions that come to mind... LX or LC? Do you want to maintain the current ride height or do a mild lift? If lifting, how high because if you go over 1.5" in the front, things like a diff drop and aftermarket UCAs become a consideration. How do you want it to ride? Budget?

Once you have a better idea what you're after, you'll likely get more assistance. Congrats on the new ride and welcome.

Echo what others said - search is your friend. Check out the Slee guide as well as the FAQ's.

My biggest piece of advice is to take your time. I jumped on what I thought was a screaming deal and overlooked a few 'minor' things. Those issues that I thought were minor have morphed into some expensive fixes. These rigs are extremely durable, capable, and desirable. But at the end of the day, mechanical issues can and do pop up. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hey guys thanks for the responses, I would probably do a mild lift I don't think I would go above 1.5 in. The suspension would need to carry a good amount of gear but not a ton.

Nick,
I'm kinda in the same place as you, looking for replacement 100 series rig. I just joined here about a month ago, and I have learned a TON just combing thru all the threads and reading. Probably 90 mins a day, 6 days a week. Wife is giving me the look right now cause I'm on again. Plenty of good advice here from the vets, but hit the books herel if you can, you will not regret, and good luck on the search.

As noted above, spend some time in the FAQs, they are a rich source of information for getting started (and for experts too!). Then do a search using the term Build Thread. That will bring up lots of threads from other members on their builds. Post back with questions when you have a rig and can be specific with what you're starting with.
