Brakes and steering in a old FJ40

With these old brakes it a good idea to get a feel for how they work when you step hard on the brakes. The steering box is slow turning which is nice off road but it the brakes pull a little the steering wheel will want to move a lot with manual steering. Another thing I did learn quick is to keep my thumbs wrapped around the steering wheel not thru it. Going slow off road you hit a rock and that steering wheel will spin right out of your hands. Keep your thumbs thru the wheel and it's going to hurt. Been there done that.

Ha...that was my first lesson told to me when I was knee high to a grasshopper, many many moons ago..."keep your thumbs out"

Same here but I still had to learn the hard way! OUCH

Funny this is like riding a bike, every time I drive one of my old cruisers off road my thumbs slide out from thru the steering wheel to along the wheel without even thinking. Probably after a couple of times the brain takes over and says not again dumby.

Even if you are careful about your thumbs, you can still end up with a broken one

DAMHIK
