I have a 1982 Land Cruiser BJ40 LX that I just bought and was looking for someplace that specialized in diesel engine.

I am also looking for a good website with diagrams on how to remove the roof and doors for the side and front.

I am also looking for someplace that can do my two rust spots on the vehicle.

Also help me paint the vehicle

Welcome!

You should buy a Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your truck from Toyota. It will cover how to remove the top and doors along with every other system on your truck. There will probably be an engine manual and a separate chassis and body manual. Buy both.
Materials Distribution Center (MDC)
Telephone: 1-800-622-2033
Hours: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm (Pacific Time)

Good luck finding any shop who is familiar with that engine since it was never imported into our market. I would buy the FSM for your motor and learn to work on it yourself. Do you see a trend here... Get the FSMs before you pass go. You may find a competent diesel shop who wants to deal with it but I would not bet on it.

Iron Pig can certainly take care of your rust spots and other body issues.

What are your plans for the truck?

Please post up some pictures of your truck! You can use a photo hosting service like ImageShack® - Image Hosting then link the photos here.

The local Toyota shop let me order the manual through them. I eventually intend on working on this a bit myself but I really wanted to get someone to give it a good once over. Jiffy lube actually carries oil filters and Fuel filters for it so that was kind of cool. Living in an apartment, I am limited in what AI can do to it in the parking lot.

My plan is to keep the diesel but add a 5 speed tranny, upgrade teh rear brakes to disks, replace the front seats with something a little more comfortable, and paint it. It will probably eventually something resto mod.

I did just replace the radio and bought some Marine speakers for it. I also picked up the kick plates from the TLC Icon website. I will probably take off the front blinkers and add the combo headlights - 1LED blinkers from that site also. Most of all, get the top off and drive the hell out of the thing.

Oh, and get one of those roll bars from some place in Fredricksberg I talked to 2 weeks ago.

I bought it from a guy in Jersey a few weeks back. I paid a bit for it, but it was better than buying from chrisman61 from New Zealand. I saw a few of the vehicles that he has sold in the US. I have not found a happy customer yet. Anyway, this guy advertized on this site also. He actually had a few Troopies and another BJ40 for sale too. I took the vehicle in the best condition cause I am lazy. Well that and apparently soft because this one had AC and PS also.

This thread is worthless without pics!

Welcome to mud “Jarhead”! :flipoff2:

Wellcome to the area.

There are two locals with Diesels Cruisers. Jim has a HJ45 and Mac has a BJ42 JIm and I have been tinkering with his HJ for the last two years and have not had much luck finding anyone to work on it but Scotty at the Diesel pump and injector shop has been very helpfull with advice and information and we've made some major improvements by fixing the obviouse stuff. If we can't find someone soon, our plan it pull off the injectors and pump ourselves and have scotty go through them. Scotty will not pull the parts off, they only bench test and rebuild injectors and pumps, they don't work on the actual truck.

Jim said that he may have found found a guy to work on the motor, PM me and I'll get you in touch with him. IIRC the guy has a background on working with Kubota and industrial equipment with small japanese diesels like Toyota forklifts, yanmar, bobcat, etc.

As far as the rust goes, fix it yourself. It's a never ending battle with a 40, if you learn to do anything DIY that should be it. For a thrid of what you'd pay someone to do it, you could buy the tools you'd need to do it. THe sort of welding skills you need for rust repair are pretty low on the totem pole.

Bring it to the Vienna Inn this Saturday.

Dallas,

Nice to see your truck. Guillermo and I had a great time looking it over.

What is the contact info for the guy you bought it from?

Jim and Tom are planning to get together and pop the injectors off the HJ45. Being a deisel owner, I'd be there if I were you.

Very, very cool rig man!

Deisel work

I would very much like to tag along. Just let me know when. I already made plans for this weekend so hopefully not then, but I am very interested.

Will deffinatly let you know when we do this. Right now I'm in the process of getting the garage organized so there is more working space. Possibly in about three weeks.

....

WORD !!!

I *love* diesels but I would be far from qualifying as a diesel mechanic. In this area it's tough to get competent help. Not sure why ? Possibly the mechanics for the big diesel rigs are not interested in the minimal wage to work on small diesels and there are not enough small diesels around to support a competitive market.

Just some ideas,
Cahil

P.S. Welcome to e-mail me with any questions ...

Welcome Dallas.

I missed the meet the other day. Maybe next time.

Got some books, microfishe, and a couple of contact. Happy to help where I can.

Mac
