New to the 60-Series World – Looking for a Project FJ60 or FJ62

I’ve been deep into car projects for a while (currently wrenching on a turbo Miata), but lately I’ve been getting the itch for something classic, capable, and full of character—which has led me to the 60-Series Land Cruisers.

I’m currently in the market for a solid FJ60 or FJ62 to build as a reliable, trail-capable rig that I can also daily or road trip occasionally. I’m mechanically inclined, so I’m not afraid of a project, but I’m trying to avoid something too far gone with rust.

What I’m hoping to learn:
• What to watch out for when buying a 60/62 (rust spots, drivetrain issues, etc.)

• Opinions on keeping the 2F or swapping to a 5-speed, diesel, or even LS down the line

• Suspension/lift suggestions for a mild overland setup

• How the community feels about “resto-modding” vs. keeping them period-correct

Appreciate all the knowledge here—been reading through a lot of amazing builds already. Looking forward to finding the right one and diving in.
 
Personally a big reason I bought my 62 was the old school i6 engine. Although my brother who bought a 5.7L Suburban instead keeps insisting that one day when I'm not looking he's gonna swap my 3FE with a "real engine" chevy small block XD

As for Diesel, ya'll have HJ's down there, don't ya?

I can't tell you what to do with your truck, but since you're asking about opinions, I've never been a fan of LED conversions and touch screens and all that. Though I do love a good old school mod.

What constitutes "Too much rust" seems to vary a lot place to place. Up here, it's pretty common for trucks of all makes to have easy access holes rusted through the bumpers. Quite convenient for dropping the fuel tanks!
 
The 2F is an inline 6 which is an inherently balanced engine. For this reason, many of us like them as they have great longevity and torque. There has been a resurgence in keeping these as they are stock and now can be modified to increase power output. Resto mod, by definition is really down to the discretion of the owner. I’d look around here as there many excellent examples using stock engines, Toyota V8’s or American V8’s. If this is in your future, think through where you want to go with the truck and have a plan.

From my perspective, one of hte reasons to buy one of these is it makes one take your time and enjoy the ride, not just the destination.
