Hello, I am new to the site but am a loyal Toyota guy. My 17 yr old son and I just bought a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 double cab for his first car. The truck was purchased new by my dad and has been in the family since. It has 120 k miles.

This was purchased after selling a 4rnr (01 also) that my daughter had as her first car. It served her well and should serve the guy who bought it well also.

That being said, my son and I are going to try to work on this truck together. My question is, what should We do to the Tacoma to make it reliable (i.e., able to hold up to teenage ownership)?

The 4rnr that we sold had a "strawberry milkshake" transmission issue before we bought it. Is that a problem that taco as have also?

I should add that it had the timing belt/water pump service 100 miles ago but my brother changed his own oil (mobile 1) and could remember no other time it had needed service...

Welcome! I also have an 01 DCSB. The engine and transmission are basically identical between a 4rnr and a Taco. The "strawberry milkshake" is a possibility but I'm not sure I'd worry about it unless something else makes you think it will happen soon. These are tough little trucks. There is a lot of good info here. I would also suggest checking out Tacoma World for more Taco specific info.

Change the radiator. Takes about 45 minutes and is good insurance. I have a friend who made a milkshake and it scared e so much that I replaced the radiator the next day.

New radiator and separate transmission cooler is the best way to go.

Next oil change Mobile 1 and you might check the transfer case/diffs and transmission fluid. I use Redline in mine. Congrats on a great truck for your son!
