Thanks @scrapdaddy , of course mine is the shape that is not available :-( Have to dig some more. My tailgate has the stamped logo so even though body is a '72 tailgate appears to be '75 or newer. This pig is a mix of ALOT of different LC's! LOL.

Drive it and enjoy it, it has character. You'll be the coolest dude in town.

Lot's of good people, encouragement and knowledge here on MUD. Good luck and have fun.

My biggest fear is taking it apart and never getting it back on the road.

I hear you brother! When I started working on mine I drove her 2 hours away and my friend and I took her all apart to clean up the body and paint her. A few months later my buddy moved away! I had the same fear. Tough decision time...

I'll be looking back as I walk into work at her and smiling....knowing she'll take me anywhere I wanna go :):beer::beer:

That is what it is all about! Having a ride that just makes you smile whenever you see it - life is good!

I must say after watching Cruiser Solutions YouTube vids of the 78 FJ55 restoration where they take a pig that looks like it needs a little bodywork and they basically uncover so much rot under a shell that didn't look that bad I can honestly say I do not have the skills or equipment to go at this body like that nor do I think I have the perseverance to see it thru. Wow....that is a ton of work. I think I am going to go at it by some strategic drain hole drilling, washing out years of dusty silt and then lots and lots of fluid film and tranny fluid/acetone mix. I am digging into rear doors today as neither window will roll down. I'll post pics of what I find :-) Happy Saturday everybody

So looking at this motor and gear it appears the keys are built into the gear. The replacement gear Scraps pointed out above looks like its a smooth bore hole? Heres a couple pics of what I have. I also am trying some 3M adhesive which is really strong to see if I can buy some life but I doubt it LOL. .... any insight on this gear style? The PO said tailgate was off of a '78.

Thanks JMac, was afraid of that after I read wardamneagles reply :-( Do you guys think a 3D printed part would stand a chance??

To be clear, the assembly will run on either shaft/gear combination. I might have one of the other shafts that will fit the gear that SOR has in stock. Might take me a day or two to remember where to look for it.

sn22,

The picture you posted of the (let's call it the pinion gear) has a black piece on it. That black piece belongs with the plastic ring gear. When the plastic broke the black piece stayed with the pinion. Wareagle is right, you just need the different pinion gear to match the new (ring gear). I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow. This is a fixable problem. 👍

I have found the round shaft and C clip. Let me know if you source a mating gear and I will give you the shaft.....in a manner of speaking. 😁
