Well I bought a 89 FJ62 today. Well traded it for an extra diesel Mercedes I had sitting around. Couldn't wait any longer for my other rig to get here. It needs a lot of work as in running would be a good thing. Has some rust, interior is far from the best and needs some brake and steering work. Otherwise great :)

Saw all of the vacume lines and smog pump and had a flashback to my 4-runner. What a nightmare that stuff is...toyota should be ashamed...but I guess EFI had to start somewhere. She is pretty oily in the compartment and has 291K miles.

I'm ordering a starter but will be out of town until the 27th. Hope to get it running that day. Will post some pics at a later date. Looking forward to getting back out there. Title work was messed up on it and hoping he will come thru soon or...well I won't go into it.

3.5 hour drive both ways today to get it. I-40 sucks just in case you do not know. My F-250 is not the softest creature on the road...wore my arse out.

Updates in a week or so.

So does it look like this one...

If it would be of use, I have a used Bosch starter off my 97. If a 1FZ starter will also fit on a 3FE, you can have it for the cause.

Hey Clint.

That's it. I will have to do some research on the starter. Thank you, I think I'm going to order one today so it will be here when I get back on Friday. They were 71 bucks at Autozone and 120 at Advanced.

We will see what direction this Land Cruiser goes. I have no idea at this point. Mild great driver, or SOA Diesel Monster. Not really sure. I think I do have lockers for it front and rear though here already which will be going in soon. I have to check the front diff size. I think it is 8" like the 80 series so I can put my ARB in. Also if the A340 and A440 are similar enough I can do a pretty easy diesel swap from work. We will see.

If it has a Toyota starter in it, you are better to just put contacts in it. I can tell you how if you want. Does it just click when you hit the key, or is it fubared for some odd reason?

Yes please. I ordered one already but I can always take it back. It does just make a click sound but can't tell if itis at the starter. Didn't have much time to screw with it. It sounded like the click was in the glove box but I'm sure it was near the starter somewhere. I'm going to be putting the other one in it Thursday unless new contacts is the way to go.

Here is something I found on Google:

Starter Contact Repair

Toyota electronics are waay better than aftermarket, the only thing i have ever seen wrong with the starters is the contacts. Very easy to do.

Call me if you want, I will be glad to explain. (I talk way better than I type)

How was the wedding ??

I also agree that it would be better to rebuild an original Denso starter versus swapping in an aftermarket. You can order the contacts at Fred Anderson. There is a thread in the 60 series FAQ on replacing the plunger and contacts.

There is also a chance that the starter may not be getting enough juice from the battery. I've had that happen before on a 4Runner, but not sure if the 60's could have a similar situation.

Anyway, the offer still stands if you want to simply try swapping in my Bosch 1FZJ starter (but I'm not sure if it would fit a 3FE). It would not cost you anything but time for us to meet and hand it over.

I just came thru that area. I'm sick of driving about 2500 miles in the past week. Just don't think I'm ready for those yet. Need to see if this thing runs.

Starter repair seems like a much better idea. I think I will put the new one on and then order the repair parts. If it works I'll just take the starter back as since I don't have the title yet it will only have a couple starts on it. Not to mention there is a deisel hopefully going in this puppy soon.

Jason I think getting the tune up parts might be an idea if you can get it started (i'm sure it needs them)
We might have a trip comming up soon out west that he might be able to make or drop off the parts.
$200 for that is a good deal

Yes I saw that. They sounded like they were already taken. I will keep that in mind though if you do some travels.

I did get it running yesterday. Put in the new starter and it started on the first crank and ran great. It had no fuel in it so I did some more work and drove it down the street to fill it up. Brakes were a bit soft as the owner mentioned that the rears didn't work. The rear passengers were caked in oil. The other sides were glazed. Cleaned them up, scuffed the glazed side and the front discs were in great shape. Stops great now. There is no sway in the front like the owner mentioned. Handles great.

Also it is not an exhuast manifold leak as stated. It is just the doughnuts on the exhuast flanges going down. Someone did a shotty job with a new exhaust so I'm probably just going to get the whole thing redone. It was short on ATF by about 2-3 quarts and a quart of oil. I thought it was going to leak everywhere as it was dripping in the driveway and it wasn't even running. Put some stop leak in both and I have not seen a single drop. So it either magically fixed it or it doesn't leak as bad as I thought though the entire undercarriage is covered in oil. But not a drop since getting it running which is great.

Small things here and there to work on but overall I'm thinking it was a good trade. I've got an engine light on but who knows why.

Just waiting on a title now.

I did put my plates from my FJ40 on there as they are still good in Oregon with the tags but I just did it to drive around here as that isn't really legal, but it keeps me from drawing the attention of the cops just in case.

The guy didn't know anything about the title work and never put it in his name but had already signed the PA title. He bought the thing for 760 bucks on Ebay had it shipped down here and never really drove it before the starter went out on him. Been sitting since then. I guess he got a pretty decent buy on it. Luckily he didn't know anything about cars so I've got it now. But a 2 paragraph answer to URE is no :)

Yesterday I did a bit of detailing work. The whole front grill was the skin colored beige where the paint wore off. So I taped up the chrome parts and painted it black. It looks really nice. I washed it then painted all the wheel covers and lug nuts then cleaned the wheels. Those wheels sure hold up well. Then I took our carpet cleaner and went to town. Seats were NASTY. Great black stuff comming up. I should have done some before and afters as the seats were disgusting. Cleaning an old car can tell you a lot about the history of a car. I'm working on the headliner now and it looks 10X better teh parts I have done. Just need to finish it up.

No ATF leaks but did find some oil leakage. Need to fix the park brakes as well. Someone disconnected them as I believe the passengers side is froze up. More work to do today.

I should go take a picture but can anyone tell me what the contraption on the passenger side of the engine is below the air cleaner. It looks similar to an oil cooler as it has a huge hose comming to it that appears to have the oil leak I am seeing on my floor. It also has two 1" plus size plugs on it. Just wondering what it is. I'm going to take it to a car wash and spray the whole thing down then try and pinpoint the leak but I think I just need a new hose and clamp.

Bueller?

Edit...just went driving and came back....it still leaks a lot :) Hopefully the stop leak in the ATF and Oil will get a chance to work itself in.

Oil cooler. Mine was leaking coolant and I fixed it with JB weld. :hillbilly:

Edit: JB stick weld (love it)

Well got some new windshield wipers on today. Sanded the rust off and painted them. Why can't everyone design them so easy.

Finished cleaning it out. Bought a first aid kit and Fire extinguisher. Velcroed the first aid and found a good spot under the other seat for the fire extinguisher. Get the CB radio in and try and fix my park brake, oil leak, ohh and get it legal and I'm first time go on my inspections.

4WD works but I can only turn the passenger front hub with a wrench...other side turns easily.

Here is a poser shot as I gave her a rundown in the subdivision. Love the automatic...you 80 guys have been cheating all this time. Besides the exhaust leaks it sounds great.

Anyone want to trade some bigger tread for some 235's...tires still have the nipples on them. They look dinky under this tank.

Damn you Jason, offer still stands I need something to put this 5 speed in, but I am sure you need something to put a diesel in. Great looking truck.

Jason let me know what kind of tire size you are looking for... I'll see what kind of deal I can pull you through work.

Greg when you get ready to sell the 55 let me know.... I just want it stripped just the body and frame is all I need (well I guess axles to roll it around on. Andrea wants one but I know my wife and I know her plans will be a huge lift on some huge tires with a huge V8 under the hood.

I'm going budget on this one and will probably keep the gasoline engine for awhile as I just put a new starter on it and will have new exhaust and o2 sensors which are out of this world expensive on it soon.

I might hold off on tires for awhile since they have great tread but at about 28 inches by my estimates they are pretty small. But would love to see what you could get Al. The KM2's 33x10.5x15 are 136 on Onlinetires.com but shipping is a ton from Cali. Wasn't one of the guys at the GSMTR handing out raffle tickets a BFG employee. He should be able to match that and shipping wouldn't be as bad from that area. Ramon...I know your father in law is a tire guy too.
