Hey guys, my cargo area carpet got mud all over it sometime while back so I decided to trash it and all I have now is the bare metal. While shopping around today, I saw a 1/4 thick foam mat for around $20 at PepBoys. I was thinking that I could cut that mat to fit the rear cargo area, then put on a couple layers of dupli-color bed liner to get that durable textured feeling to cover up the bare metal. Do you guys see any cons with that idea? I thought about bed-lining just the bare metal but I still would like some cushioning and sound-dampening back there.

Sounds great to me. You got a picture of the mat?

I do not at the moment but when I go and get it, I will take some pictures of the install

At Tractor Supply (in CT.) they have a 4' wide roll of 1/2" thick heavy duty rubber they sell by the ft. length. I have used it before in the back of trucks and SUV's . Its not cheap but works great

I've been looking at those but the closest Tractor Supply is a pretty far trip from where I'm located.

Mud washes out. ************

Post some pics if you do it.

Oh believe me, hah, I've tried pressure washing it because it was 1cm thick caked mud. The result didnt turn out too pretty. But I'll keep you guys posted!

So this is what my cargo area looked like without the carpet. I started off by taking off the 8 nuts and 4 metal things to make measuring easier. I used this 46" x 93" foam diamond plated mat from pepboys.

I cut out a 46" x 49" rectangle. Starting on one side first, I gestimated and cut areas using scissors until the dimensions fit. Then I moved on to the next side. WARNING. **If you decide to this my way, don't think you can take a short cut by folding the mat in half and tracing the curve of the wheel well because they are NOT the same.

After cutting out the dimensions, I took a can of dupli-color bed liner and applied as many coats as I could to the mat (about 3 layers).

I let it dry then I started installation starting at the chrome metal trim.

I used those previous 8 nuts to secure the mat in place. I also used those 4 plastic clips that held in the carpet underneath the 2nd row seats to secure the mat in as well. However, there are still pockets of air underneath the mat. I figure it was due to how the mat was stored (rolled up) so I'll let time and weight help settle in the mat. If that still doesn't fix it. I'll consider some spray adhesive later on down the road. Here are some pictures of after the install. Took roughly about 1:30hr.

Nice job, looks good. You might want to add some washers (to the 8 bolts) to spread out the clamping force. This way they are less likely to rip out when something heavy is being dragged across the liner.

Thanks, good call!
