I think that once the bumper gets finish, it should look alot better then how it looks now, add some covers make it smooth, painter black , and it should look like a 500.00 dollar rear bumper?

I think he fully understood that. He was commenting on the negative comment the other guy made about people with "lesser" trucks.

Not a negative comment, just realistic. I love these trucks just as much as anyone, in all morphs. I hope what I said didn't sound rude. I think c6h1206 got it without getting offended and knew I wasn't calling out everyone with an 80.

We all have life, work, children, responsibilities, condos/apartments w no garage for tools, etc that affect how/if/when we get to use our trucks. I respect all of that and much of the things on my truck are there because they look cool, not because they get used.

OPs always searching/building something to fund the niche. I think that's rad. But anyone who wants a 'high clearance ' bumper for the real reason doesn't give a *** about cutting to get it.

Nobody at Starbucks cares about 'high clearance' except if it happens to look cool, creating conversation.... this bumper does not.

There are a great many 80 series trucks that our absolutely all show, no go. If you respond to this comment, maybe you're guilty ? I don't care, I still think you're truck is awesome and I'll join you for a frapachino to look at it because I love the same stuff you do.

Looking again at the original post, I agree that something is going to have to give here. Excellent corner clearance and high clearance are pretty tough if you aren't willing to start hacking away at the rear of the frame. Maybe that's the rub. It's tough to do much back there and still maintain the ability to put the spare underneath. Every popular bumper seems to need that space for bracing and support after the cross-member is cut away and/or a receiver is added to the bumper.

I consider my present 4x4 labs bumper high clearance mainly because when looking for a bumper I could not find an over the counter bumper with more clearance. The reason I noted high clearance in the first post is because the deproach angle of the new bumper in within 2° of my labs bumper making high clearance based on the above.

Our challenge was to create a bumper with maximum clearance WITHOUT cutting the frame. We accomplished more clearance in areas that needed based on the damaged areas on most bumper and are on par with some of the popular bumpers some requiring the frame to be cut and others not.

Im not trying to make this bumper into a mass produced bumper just sharing with the forum what we came up with given the challenge nothing more.

Speaking of that, has anybody compared the BIOR to the 4x4Labs? Haven't really seen many pics on MUD aside from this one. Looks like it sits pretty high too

Corners stick out just as much

Rear bumper is definitely on my list. I'm in the non-chopping, anti-swingout, and needing decent clearance camp so sounds pretty perfect to me. Looking forward to the finished product with anticipated price.

I think removing the corners is what makes yours look so bad. My $.02.

Function vs aesthetics

Sorry you think it looks bad I will look forward to the thread on yours;)

I understand the discussion about dealing with the spare tire location challenge.
  • Tire carrier: bothersome swingout always in the way. Can interfere with towing.
  • Roof: can't fit in the garage, drive throughs, makes poor gas mileage worse.
  • Inside rear of cab: sucks up too much space. Hassle at times
  • Skinny spare snugged up under truck: This is becoming appealing to me. I finally changed a tire the other week after not having a flat for nine years. Seems like my flats are never from off roading, its from box razors , nails, and bolts. Ive never had to change a tire in the mud ( knock on wood,) When I'm in and out of my truck several times each day the rear tire is always in the way. I'd play the odds here if I was looking for a change: not cut the rear crossmember and leave room for the spare.
Id like to see how the q78 looks like under the truck when it s done.

What is the outer diameter of that tire?

You asked for feedback and that's what I'm providing. I've said a few positives in this thread about it already. Don't get butt hurt when you ask for feedback and get what you don't want. There's no doubt it's butt ugly, no doubt. If its ALL about functionality then cut the hole damn rear of the rig off after the rear axle.

I like the bumper design I would say I like the mix of plate and tube and I wouldn't think 16 guage sheet metal inserts would look very good after you drag them on rocks oh wait maybe you just go to the mall and if the price point is low then why bother leave them open tube design or add some real 1/8 or 3/16 inserts and grind and weld all that and then your final price will be just as much as the big names is 80 rear bumpers vendors just my two cents lol

I would like a tube option. It would match my small stinger MT front bumper. I have always been a tube bumper fan. It reminds me of seeing Ivan Stewart racing for Team Toyota when I was young. I think once its painted it wont look bad at all. Being a business owner people have no concept of time and money involved in projects, overhead and shipping. People will complain no matter the price. As for the swing out discussion. I have one on my 100 and it is a pain in the ass. I have tall skinnies on the 80. With the spare tire mod to get a little extra clearance I can barely see the spare hanging underneath.

After sitting back and reading all these post - for those that don't think it is pleasing to the eye - think of it as a CONDOM (rubber) - not aesthetically pleasing to the eye but it does offer the protection you need.
