Hi everybody,

I've been lurking for a few months now while considering purchasing an fj62, and finally pulled the trigger on a '89 fj62 with 147k, with (supposedly) a tranny and engine rebuild 15k ago, although there was no paperwork - (You're probably laughing, I know :) ).

The truck has a bit of a rough idle, with the tach needle moving up and down slightly (barely noticeable unless looking closely, but definitely moving). There is also a slight gasoline smell barely noticeable in the cab while driving, but more noticeable outside when the engine is running and after it's been shut off.

Also, the truck seems like it is upshifting into second too quickly; i.e. it seems underpowered in 2nd (it shifts at about 1800-1900 rpm, which I would think would be normal). If I really gas it (which I find myself doing off the line at lights when going uphill or in fast traffic), it downshifts and hits 3500 rpm or so and gives me enough power. I know these aren't the fastest trucks, but when there are little old ladies in 1984 Camrys and stock 87 4runners unintentionally dusting me, it gives me a little cause for concern. The mileage also seems a little low, running at 9-11 mpg on stock tires.

I did a search, and the recommendation seems to be a fuel filter change. My question is, could the fuel smell be related to this, and could the low mileage / underpowered issue be related as well?

And to tack on another question (sorry), the shifter handle is real loose (wobbles around in each gear, R and P to where you can move the indicator to almost either the gear above or below) but doesn't slip at all and feels firm shiftin from P to D and 1,2,3 - Do the shifter bushings need replacement, or does something in the box need to be tightened?

Thanks for all your help; hope I can actually learn something someday and contribute. :)

Start with a tune up and search for additional idle fixes. Water in tank, dirty fuel injectors and dirty throttle body are common causes.

Check the lick down cable adjustment for the tranny issue. Change the fluid.

Buy the small blue bushings from Toyota. Replace them at the bottom of the shifter body. 1/2 hour job and costs little.

Um, that's KICK down cable, not lick down cable....

Dearborn forgot which web forum he was on :flipoff2:

That fuel smell kinda bothers me. If you cant locate it soon I would go for help. The rest of the stuff you can work through as time permits. Great to have you.

fuel smell, replace gas cap to start with
rought idle.........they all(almost all) idle rough

But they almost all can idle smoothly. Above suggestions all great ones...Tune up, gas cap, adjust valves, maybe a Fuel Pressure Regulator, possibley o2 sensors. If that doesn't do it, rebuild the injectors. Start at the cheapest solution and keep going till it gets better. Use Toyota parts and enjoy the process.

The other option: just ignore it. It probably isn't a big deal, if it is it will get worse and you will have to do something about it.

Just a tidbit:
For the fuel smell, check the fuel pulsation dampener to see if it is leaking. It is the half dome thingy at the back of the fuel rail by the fire wall. I once had a fuel smell problem and that was the culprit, maybe it is yours too.

I had bad fuel mileage on my 62 and when I changed the oxygen sensors(2), the fuel consumption and idle got better. I did this at about 199k and was done because I was getting engine codes when running over 55mph. Sooner or later you'll have to change them so I would recommend doing them. The best price I found was at www.oxygensensors.com. I am not affiliated with them and only gave their site because they were the cheapest.I'm just trying to save you some time looking for a good source that worked for me(over 1 year now on the vehicle). Good Luck.

Hey Archie,

Thanks for the link! Oxygensensors.com lists three different sensors for the FJ62. Which did you get? I'm hoping you got the cheapest ones, as they are 50% the price of the other two. Thanks!

I believe I got the sensor under 70/each, call them and you should not have a problem, they will direct you in the right direction. Just change both of them instead of just one. One of the sensors are hard to access near the tranny and I wrote a thread about it, try doing a search. Spray penetrating oil a few days earlier on the sensors to loosen up the rust. Tell us whether you feel a difference in power and fuel economy.

Fuel smell ???

To solve my fuel smell problem I ended up replacing the hose connect panel which separated the gas tank side hoses from the inner fender hoses. Had a rusted pipe which was leaking the vent system. Wasn't able to see the rusted pipe but there was plenty of gas dripping from the bottom fender lip passenger side.

FWIW,
Cahil

All good advice. I agree with all of it. Start with the fuel tank cap (get a Toyota one from the dealer) and look for leaks inside the passenger side rear quarter panel - the evaporator thingy that recycles gas funes is in there and it can get rusty.

Anyone that has a bad fuel pressure pulsation dampener should replace the fuel pressure regulator - it is the culprit for a blown FPPD.

I got my O2 sensors at oxygensensors.com too. I got the less expensive of the version that was plug and play and they are working fine after a year and a half. My 3FE is as tuned as it can get - I still get 10mpg in town but up to 18 on the highway.

See the 60/62 FAQ for lots of hints. Read the "3FE fuel problems" thread about my trials and tribulations with the FPR for a good understanding of that common problem...

Good to know, thanks. I replaced my fuel pulsation dampener a year ago or so because it was leaking. Never thought about replacing the pressure regulator too. I think I will do that before the pulsation dampener starts leaking again.

You might also look at the charcoal canister as there known to go south as well. they're easy to check and clean. when I did mine it had a bad check valve in it.
