So my wife meets the new neighbors father who is a dentist and his son moving in next door is a dentist also now and they are opening up a practice together a few miles south in town.

The dad has a 99 LC with ~200k on it with the usual options (rear diff lock, etc) He loves loves loves LC's and went bonkers over mine and wanted to buy it right away and even mentioned to my wife that he'd practically trade it for my 80 since he wants something new and different in terms of LC for driving back and forth to work and weekends. He thinks a trade wouldn't be as fair since his has so much mileage and mine is about 124k so I think I have the upper hand haha. He loves the whole bull bar / light combo etc.

I have always wanted the V8 power and plusher ride for vacations and the wife since the 80 drives like a truck.

I figure if I took a look at his (since I have only seen it briefly) and got the 411 on it all together I might consider a "trade"

Edmunds Private Value says about $6800 in Clean condition for his and my LC is 124k miles with all the mods in my signature.

So pending the timing belt and maintenance records I think that'd be awesome to "trade"

What say you ? :)

My opinion is that your 80 is worth more than the 100 series and you'd be better off selling yours and finding a 100 with lower miles. Double locked 80s with low miles like yours sell for top dollar and yours has good mild mods too. 100s are becoming far more common for low prices with decent miles and I think you'd probably come out ahead to sell yours and buy a different one. Just my $.02

That was my original plan was to sell and get something lower mileage 100 wise. The few 100's that sell in my area are asking top dollar and its pretty annoying haha.

Don't exactly have the time to fly out somewhere and drive one back with family issues, etc so that limits my selection.

Guess I'll keep on looking most likely

I agree that you have a low mileage dialed in 80 and it is indeed worth more and much harder to come by. I'd keep that one for good and add a 100 later when it permits. I've been known to be a vehicle hoarder though... :hillbilly:

haha I wish.. I just looked at cars.com within 150 miles and craigslist etc almost no one is currently selling any 98-2000 within the range I am willing to go. I drove 2 hours each way to get the 80 and I considered that pretty far since I had to go look at it first then come back again to purchase.

Even if I could sell my 80 at ~9k which might even be wishful thinking even with the mods since most kids around here buy old jeeps since I live in coal country I'd still need 2-4 thousand extra cash which I don't have that just to splash down to get another vehicle.

So I probably will just keep the 80, barring some crazy good deal on a 100 from a private owner in the future, and wait it out and sell fully modded out.

Now if the fathers 99 is fully maintenanced and he took care of it (its the green color fyi)
and maybe offered me and extra $1500-2000 that could be tempting

:)

Sold my locked 80 about 2 years ago with over 200K miles. Basically stock but looked like it only had 1/4 the miles it had (no exaggeration). Basically was looking to do the same thing you are, upgrade to a larger engine and more room for the family.

Recently bought a low mileage 2006 100 series. It's nice, but I miss the 80.

FWIW, I'm seeing locked 80s (in good condition) with similar mileage as yours selling well over $10K. I'd hold onto it and hold out for a 100 series when you find what you want in the price point that allows you to keep both.

...Even if I could sell my 80 at ~9k which might even be wishful thinking...

Clean triple-locked 80 at low 100k mileage can go well-above $10k. No wishful thinking needed. Post in the classifieds here and I give it 1 week, tops, before somebody snatches it up.

You should trade for a week and see how you like it.

That'd also make it easier to learn more about the condition of the 100, and whether or not you are really interested in trading for keeps.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I have to actually get a real look at it top to bottom and drive it and see how I like it along with seeing if he has a mostly comprehensive maintenance history.

I know some people on the 100 board have bought ~200k vehicles that were in good condition with a good history and didn't mind it.

Being a dentist and having money I figure he kept it up pretty well but I'll find out soon.

I figure if he would go for $2000-2500 over trading equal that might be enough depending on all of the above I just mentioned.

Just not having to drive hours to look at one after selling my 80 would be worth a lot on its own. Closest ones on craigslist that I would drive to are easily 2-4 hours one way.

I'll update in a bit when I finally get a close look at it and talk to the father.

Throwing out a few things:

Does an 80 or 100 fit your future life better? If you did update to a 100, is a 99 with 200k a reasonable fit?

Looks like you have a DD, will moving up to the 100 become an expensive rebuild for part time fun? How many thousands of dollars is the 100 going to cost you in mods over time in order to get it similar to your 80?

What maintenance is soon to be needed on your 80 and his 100?

How are tires, shocks, brakes, etc on both vehicles?

There could be thousands of dollars either way depending on the answers to these questions.

Well to answer all that in general:

My 80:
Needs new birfs at some point, clicks in sharp turns as alot of 80's do at some point. I already rebuilt and they still click. Will need a new exhaust in a year or so.

Other than that its up to speed with maintenance.

100: Pretty much have to look it over top to bottom and get records to see where he is at.

I want a 100 eventually to suit our current lifestyle with growing kids. The extra amenities and comfort the wife wants and I do.

I wouldn't mod out the 100 as much as I was eventually going to mod the 80.. I just do light off roading when I can get the time.

So yes for me if the 100 is up to snuff and clean and he would agree to $2k or so plus trade I would probably be down with it.

I would never go with less than a 2003 LC in the 100 series, but that's me. That's the turning point where you got the 5 speed trans and so forth. Locker? Who cares, you can get an ARB or two forget that OEM stuff in the earlier 100s. You have a LOT more options for the 100 than you used to have. 35" tires can be done anytime these days. Dual ARBS, heavier duty suspensions, extra fuel or water tanks, fridge freezers, roof racks, bumpers etc are all doable on the 100 series. When I got my 100 I custom made the section that connects it to the roof. Only one like it in the world that I know of. Want comfort, reliability and off road all in 1 package? Get a 100 in a 2003 or newer and you will not go wrong.

i would keep the 80 its paid and the mods will not affect resale

and would hunt for any year 100 series with service history and be done with

no mods on the 100 and give to the missus everyone is happy

Got a update on the vehicle today saw the guy at my local pizza place.

Checked it outside inside.. its basically in excellent condition except for the leather on the driver seat.

208k miles
he has all the service done and records... timing belt / water pump just done
he bought it at 80k miles from Florida and has had it ever since.

He bought a 92 as a first owner and kept it til 280k and it died.. and had a 95 once and sold that at 250k and then got this 99.

It was a lot nicer condition than I thought. We talked a bit about LC's and went on our way. I'll see him next week anyway to drive it.

I figure my 94 for his 100 + $2000 or so and I totally would trade.. If I wait to find one close with lower miles it'll be thousands more and a long drive to see and pick it up where this guy lives around here.

So you may see me posting with my new 99 100 (think color is Imperial Jade) pictures in a few weeks if all goes well in the test drive and under body look over.

I wish I could keep the 80 and get the 100 but I am not that rich haha
I use the vehicle on vacations and sometimes the wife takes it for appointments and weekend cruising so I won't be putting a lot of mileage on it.

I'll also post pics in a week or two.

My 94 started at 104k and has 120k in over 3 years.

:)

I would doubt that he would give u an extra $2k cash but if he does take it and run. I haven't ever owned an 80 but my best friend does. He often asks to trade me straight up (mine only has 115k) and we both have a good chuckle. Like you, I have a growing fam, operate it mostly on the pavement, and use it as a DD. 200k is nothing for an LC, especially if it's well maintained, and with you only putting 5-8k a year on a rig you can be reasonably confident that his 100 series with 208k is going to last you a loooooong time with pretty minimal cost of ownership. I would pull the trigger on a straight up trade if I were in your shoes, but don't hesitate to ask him to throw in some free dental for you and your family as part of the deal. I have a brother that's a dentist and a brother that's an MD, and I am and electrician and all of us work our business into various deals, and works out really well for all parties. Good luck with your choice, I don't think you can make any big mistakes with this deal.

yea I figure $2k might be asking much, I'd like to get just enough for some new 33's :) so call it $1000. Reason I mention the extra cash is that he thinks mine is worth more than his with all the extras. I think hes driven mostly stock cruisers and wants something he can maybe finally go off road with.

Edmunds says $7k for his in clean condition so since I saw it and its in mostly excellent condition lets say $7500. Looked on the classifieds on here for 80's with mods and they are asking 8-9k range with similar miles sometimes more.

So I figure maybe $2k extra is too much I'll just ask $1k which I am pretty sure he'll go for and be done with it.
If he himms and hahhs about $1k i'll just trade even like you said and be done with it.

And yes we already asked about the dentist favors when he opens their office for our kids since they have special needs, etc. He was yea no problem etc.

Me personally, I couldn't do it!! How attached are you to yours? It won't bother you to see someone else driving it around the neighborhood while you are stuck with soccer mom status? HaHa!

Here is how I look at it..... He has had both and now wants to go back to 80. That says something to me.

I am not attached to it that much, always looked forward to getting a 100 at some point.. mileage may be high but with the condition and records he has I can't pass it up seeing as I go 6k miles a year in it. :)

Hmmm...never driven an 80...this thread is making me want to go out and find one and drive it just to compare.
