Hi. My Name is Carlos and l am reading this forum since 2014. IH8MUD helped me a lot with my 1993 LJ78 and now i think it is time to give something back to the forum and share my experiences with this car.
Shortly after I bought the LJ78 in 2014 I had the obligatory engine issues with the 2L-TE, then upgraded the fan clutch, recored the radiator, serviced the cooling system...
The shocks are KYB aftermarket parts in stock length. Front springs are slightly modified genuine front springs out of an 2001? HZJ78. The rear springs are front springs out of an 1993? J8. So it is a low budget suspension with a 70 to 80 mm lift but works great for me: Ride is much more comfortable and the car is extremely capable off-road even without lockers. I put the roll bars back in to avoid tearing off the shocks because the negative spring path is only 20 mm unloaded. Longer shocks are on my list. Together with longer breake lines.
Tyres are BFG KM2 in 33x10.5 R15 on stock alloy rims with 30 mm spacers on each side. I run 0.8 bar on sand, 1.2 to 1.4 bar offroad and 3.4 bar on highways for better fuel economy. Below 1.4 bar fuel economy is really bad (18 l for 100 km, usually 10 -14 l for 100 km).
I used my LJ78 as a daily driver, but since 2017 I only use it for overland trips to eastern Europe (mainly Romania) and north Africa (1× Tunisia).
Below you can find a picture from the recent trip to Romania.
Greetings from Austria!
