I am purchasing, don't have it yet, a 98 LX 470 with 130K on the clock. I have a 96 LX450 that I just sold, so my question is MODs. The car is stock with brand new tires so with a new born in the house I can't afford to do too much right off the bat. I do have a utility Baja Rack for my RTT, but that's it for the time being. Suggestions on what I should do first? Since the tires are brand new I would hate to replace them, but I could sell them and do a lift with tires. I only have a $2k budget, due to the baby. Thoughts?? Keep it as is, sliders, bumper? Once I get it I will post some pics and introduce myself better.

Welcome and congrats. Unless you are doing severe wheeling, just run the stock tires until they wear out and put your budget into PM's and other upgrades, maybe sliders?

Problem with new tires is that they seem to last FOREVER (when they are not the ones you truly want). Also, when you think about it, tires are the foundation of the whole build. Ever seen a built 100 with LTXs on it? Given your budget, I would sell the current tires ASAP and pick up a slightly used set or some affordable new ATs. Add sliders and you are well on your way with regards to both functionality and looks. If you kept your current tires and then came into more disposable income in a year or two, the tires you have now will be close to worthless. Better to get what can for them now.

I sold my LTX MS tires to another mud member to put on his wife's LX470, and made a nice bit of money to offset the cost of my DT's. It can be done. If I were in your shoes, I'd do the following:

1. Buy new tires with money out of budget, keep OEM tires in the garage for a bit
2. Baseline all fluids with money out of budget
3. Sell OEM tires, add proceeds to budget
4. Use remainder to add step-sliders (steps option to keep it easy for the wife/kiddo to get in and out)
5. Anything left over? Add some Iron Man or Slee coil spacers and crank up and/or re-index the OEM torsion bars for a little lift to go with with your new skins

You're on your way to a well baselined, handsome looking rig that is still family friendly.
